What are some of your favorite flops?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Any kind. Either favorite because of schadenfreude OR because you actually like the end product.

I actually genuinely enjoyed Lady in the Water (I did only see it once, in theatres).

Dashcon. I got to experience live through posts of people there. Including some people I followed. It was amazing.

I vaguely remember the shit storm, but the ball pit really stood out to me. Ball pits are hella gross.

Basically all of John Carpenter's movies except for Halloween and Escape From New York? I mean, I like those two as well, but they were financially successful.

I watch John Carpenter's Vampires every year for Halloween lol

How dare you. That movie is a disgrace to the book it was based on!

THERE'S A BOOK???

Vampires by John Steakley.

I will never forgive that movie for very literally killing off nearly every main fucking character in the first five minutes which basically means the rest of the movie has no resemblance at all to the book. :(

I think The Fog actually did well, too. And I'm not sure I would consider The Thing a flop because, although it didn't do well financially or critically upon its initial release, it found an audience (a very passionate one) and critical praise (considered one of the best sci-fi/horror movies) later.

Yeah, The Fog did OK. As did Starman - those are probably the big 4.

A lot of Carpenter's movies succeeded after the fact, because he's a really fucking good director who made great movies - Big Trouble and They Live in particular are cult classics - but they were still flops at the time.

I think technically Josie and the Pussycats (2001) was a flop at the box office, but damn if my sister and I didn't watch it a million times that summer + introduce it to all of our friends/female cousins. I still love it and the soundtrack.

My best friends and I were obsessed too! Every sleepover: Josie and the Pussycats, Charlie's Angels, and Coyote Ugly.

As a bonafide marvel Bitch I had serious schadenfreude when both BvS and the Mummy flopped, particularly the latter. At least with BvS the people involved cared about the product, Mummy was such a blatant cash grab I'm amazed Universal thought it was a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Tomorrowland (not a bad movie) and Cutthroat Island (a kind of bad movie, but in a fun way, I genuinely liked.

I can't say I really liked Chill Factor, but the fact that such a bizarre movie got green-lighted and nobody involved at any point stopped it, makes me think of it fondly.

The Mummy (2017), the one with Tom Cruise, I was really glad flopped

Oh I love Cuttthroat Island!

Wachowski films may be trainwrecks on multiple levels, but they're glorious trainwrecks.

I don't even really like their movies personally, but I'm genuinely so happy that they've been able to make all of these massive, big-budget movies despite the fact that they're fundamentally really niche, and weird, and totally outside the mainstream as filmmakers

It's honestly really great, it makes me happy that they existed
