"Hey OP, you know those performers you really wanted to see in person? Well, one of them isn't that good. I'm telling you this for Reasons."

AYRT—because I don’t like his Phantom very much? I get wanting to see certain actors or combos of actors live—would’ve loved to see Crawford/Brightman/Barton, even if Brightman’s acting supposedly wasn’t great—but while Karimloo was better than Gerard Butler, he wasn’t that great in the role. And while I only found out about his comments after seeing him live a couple times, his remarks about the Phantom being autistic/playing the Phantom as autistic were kind of gross, tbh.

I think Karimloo and Boggess are more or less phandom royalty, between the 25th anniversary concert and (blech) Love Never Dies, but I like Boggess better than Karimloo and still think she’s overexposed. After the 2004 movie, you couldn’t mention PotO without people gushing about Butler and Rossum, but it predated Tumblr fandom and was mostly confined to forums/LJ. Since the 25th anniversary concert was released on dvd in 2012, a lot of people went completely apeshit about Boggess and Karimloo in the same way on social media and it got annoying fast.

There are certainly worse actors than Karimloo to have played Erik. Butler, Uwe Kroger, Paul Stanley (the one from K.I.S.S.), Tim Martin Gleason (who I have also seen live and who flat out sucked. But there’s been much better, too.

"Hey OP, I don't like those people you like, just thought you needed to know that because it's very important information you obviously cannot live without. And oh btw the actor you wanted to see perform live is super problematic and the actress you wanted to see perform live is over-exposed. Thought you needed to know that too because I have lots of opinions on how the stuff you like isn't good enough. I totally didn't want you to have regrets over not seeing people who kind of suck, lol..."

AYRT—since you object so strongly to my spewing my opinion everywhere on a fandom secret, and wanted, idk, people to comiserate with OP about how it sucks that they didn’t get to see their faves, you could’ve counterbalanced my rancid opinion by saying “sorry OP, that sucks,” or “Ramin is awesome I wish you could’ve seen him too,” or something, at least in addition to objecting to my comments.

And saying the Phantom’s murders weren’t premeditated, he just “lost control” because Aspergers, was a stupid thing to say, especially when he researched precisely jack squat before deciding that “homicidal kidnapping extortionist” = “autistic.” Neurotypical dudes go on murderous rampages because women avoid them all the time. So Karimloo’s remarks don’t make him a monster, just ignorant and perpetuating ignorance. I doubt he’s a bad person and he doesn’t seem like a bad actor. I personally just didn’t like his acting or singing in the role much. He made a great Raoul and a solid Enjolras.

Do you respond to every critical comment on an actor/piece of media on FS by objecting to the criticism instead of sharing your own more positive experience? If I said that despite my liking a few of his musicals, ALW is a plagiarizing hack (even in his work on PotO) who’s said crappy stuff about his fans and done shitty things from his seat in the House of Lords, would I be out of bounds?

It's really funny that you feel so free to voice all your opinions on how what OP is interested in really isn't that good, and at the same time you're scolding someone else for not leaving a "positive experience". LOL!

I cannot say “Ramin is awesome I wish you could’ve seen him too" because I don't in fact know that performer, nor have I actually seen him. But here, let me try:

I'm sorry OP, that sucks! And so do people who respond to your secret about things you like by telling you how the things you like are bad. It sucks even more when they dig themselves in deeper by subtly shaming you for wanting to see a problematic person sing followed by a bunch of negativity about the thing you like. OP, I hope one day you do get to see Phantom live and that it's awesome! Unlike the other anon in this thread.
