I had similar feelings about Zac Efron when that rumor was going around that he was going to play Light in an American version of Death Note back in the day. I think he would've done a good job.

The vicious attitude towards the original dub bugs me too. I understand where it's coming from since so many things were changed and some of the acting left a lot to be desired, but I really liked many of the original VAs (especially Jupiter's and I'm glad her new VA is a pretty close match to the original one). The inserts songs were really good too. It's sacrilegious to say so in some circles, but I even liked some of the dialogue changes (like Luna's sad little speech in the Hearts on Ice movie, minus the kitty crying). That's not to say the Viz dub is bad. It's really good and I'm enjoying it, but it's not without its flaws (like when Usagi's studying English to meet Mamoru's professor and friends and the whole language conflict doesn't exist in the dub because, instead of having the professor speak French or another foreign language, they just had him speak English).

Ha... I actually think the songs were kind of terrible, but you know what? I bought the goddamn album anyway, and downloaded tracks from the other NA collections, and I've been known to belt out out some of the tunes while driving down the highway.

TBH I got that the conflict existed and didn't need it spelled out by having someone speaking a foreign language because they repeatedly said they were in Japan, Japan, Japan, and we're all smart enough to understand that means they're normally speaking Japanese. We just get it in English because we speak and understand English, and I like that they didn't dumb it down.

After the Netflix Death Note, I wish we got Zac Efron instead. At least he looks compelling.

Hahahhaha. I dunno. If that adaptation was the best they could come up with after all those years, what kind of movie would we have gotten eight years ago?

(I thought Melancholia was beautiful. Weird as fuck, but aesthetically pleasing & I loved her in it.)

My only real problem with the original dub (aside from the OMG CHILDRENZ R WATCHIGN!!!11 edits) is that they randomly cut out dialogue for no reason and then added a bunch of stuff that completely changed the tone of the scene. For example, in the episode where Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask discover each other's identities, Tuxedo Mask is telling Sailor Moon that he's always going to protect her, while in the NA version, I think he says something about needing the Rainbow Crystals to find the Moon Princess and Sailor Moon agrees. It's like, why? Sure, what happens next is basically the same, and I can't think of any reason why that was necessary at all.

But back in the 90s, for many of us, it was our first and/or only exposure to that story. And considering what it could have been, I'm glad we got the dub.

I'm just a gay who grew up bitter at the censoring of all the gay. That's why I've disowned the old dub. Yeah, it got me into it, but now that I'm a grown-up gay, it makes me angry just thinking of what they did. Hell, they even cut entire episodes to censor that characters died, which makes a hell of a lot more sense of Usagi's reactions later on especially in the R movie. Girl has PTSD and doesn't want to watch her friends die horribly again.

Gotta love how they censored the gay with Uranus and Neptune, but kept all the subtext. Even as a kid I thought there was something going on with them, but didn't have the words for it yet.

It was confusing as hell. Google saved me.

Yeah, making them cousins just made them seem incestuous and no less gay.

See! I didn't know the censorship was that strong!

I always loved Neptune, and as a kid I was a little confused about Uranus (cross dressing? Is she really a he? Is this sailor with Neptune?) but I always figured the lack of context due to the censorship had lot to do with that. And now I'm guessing I'M right

They made them cousins for some reason, but they're really just gay. Also Zoisite and Kunzite were gay in the anime. Haruka (Uranus) also had a huge crush on Usagi and outright admitted it, there were entire episodes that made it a subtle point that Usagi is very very bi... Things like that. There's so much that was censored, including all the Messiah talks and the Holy Grail talks (Purity Chalice? Really?).

They can say that Usagi looks white because she looks like Princess Serenity, not Kenji and Ikuko.
