Re: What about fandom has surprised you, FS?

Hi there, would you mind explaining this to me, I am not in that fandom and know little about it beyond the crazy shippers who believed the actual actors were in a romantic relationship.

The most recent series was not well received (among other things, Moriarty was revealed as not the big bad, but rather the dragon to Sherlock and Mycroft's even smarter sister, who we'd never heard of before), and some people simply can't believe it was merely a misfire...combine it with the generally conspiracy-theory-friendly fandom, and things get weird.

I don't think people believing the actors were together was ever much of a thing (at least not more of a thing than in any other fandom) although there were certainly people who did believe it.

A separate issue was a few particularly... interesting people believing that since they didn't like S4, or at least the last episode of it, that there would be a secret extra episode airing in the time slot the next week that would "fix" everything because TPTB wanted the audience to be like Sherlock and solve sneaky puzzles and only those who solved the case and figured it out would know to tune in the next week and... I don't know the whole logic, although I did read someone's explanation somewhere that "if you just follow the clues..." Yeah. But hey, you've got to give them props for originality. It's certainly different that the normal "I reject as canon this part I don't like" or just writing fic that makes things go your way that typically happens when fans are displeased (I mean, that happened too, along with some people not disliking the last ep, because not everyone in the fandom is crazy).
