Severus Snape. The first book tried to sell him so hard as the bad guy who was trying to steal the philosopher's stone that I figured it had to be a red herring, and when I was proved right I started stanning him hard.

It took me years to realize that even if he was one of the good guys, he himself wasn't a good person. Just a bitter, abusive man who put his personal feelings above anything else and enjoyed using his position of power to bully innocent children.
