Kind of inspired by #7 - RPF question

(Anonymous) 2018-08-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
How do you guys feel about RPF? I remember years ago it was considered morally wrong and anyone that shipped it was a horrible person, and then not too long ago I was seeing comments like "oh, it's no big deal, nobody's outraged over RPF anymore, there's too much other stuff to get upset about".

I mean, I get thinking it's creepy especially when you involve real life spouses and kids cause these are actual people who can potentially stumble across this stuff, but then I see people saying "oh, it's not really about THEM, it's about their public persona, no one knows what they're ACTUALLY like when they're not in front of a camera/on a stage" and...I don't know.

I'm just not sure what the general consensus is anymore. Thoughts?

Just don't share it with the people. Do whatever else you want.

Agree with the other anon. Don't go showing it to the people involved. Don't be like the cringy people who bring it up at con panels.

It's fine if you're a reasonable person who's capable of separating a public persona from someone's real existence, and who can be a fan respectfully

I find it creepy but so long as it's kept in it's own corners I don't really care which celebs people are writing about.

Tinhatters though are another level of scary and creepy and they can fuck off, especially if they start dragging the kids and SO's of said celebs into their mess.

Tinhatters are fucking scary. I tend to keep it on the down-low that I enjoy RPF and I only talk about it with likeminded people who understand that we're shipping fantasies, but every now and then we get one of those crazy fucks rambling in and it really sucks dealing with those people.

You have my sympathies nonnie. I really don't believe the most or even all RPF shippers are like that, you've just unfortunately got a very disturbing fringe group.

I can only imagine how frustrating it is dealing with them in-fandom.

I'll let people ship and write whatever they want on the outside, but inside I find it super creepy and invasive.

The "public persona" line doesn't realy work for me because I used to be involved in the music industry and spent a lot of time backstage at concerts large and small, and most of the musicians are not putting on a persona. What tone of voice they use for fans and what antics they perform on stage amount to nothing more than customer service, at best, deliberate fanservice at worst.

I'm... not a fan of it. People are going to do what they want, but that doesn't mean I can't side eye you about it.

I don't care for it, and I don't encourage it. In cases of parody, maybe. But even then I don't write it or seek it out.

If others do it? Well, I still don't care for it, but I'm not going to say anything unless they're being creepy af about it, and showing it to the celeb or getting waaaay too serious about a fantasy and attacking anything/anyone in the celeb's life that contradicts the fantasy.

It can get too creepy too fast. Fans are bad at maintaining characterisation, and fans are bad at maintaining emotional distance, and fans are bad at maintaining a sense of the separation of reality & fantasy. So RPF ends up just like most fic, but without the excuse of it being "just characters!"

As a reader, an RPF fic can be fascinatingly embarrassing, or just horrifyingly stupid.

I've read and written a lot of RPF, most of the time I don't see a problem with it because it's fun and kept in small parts of the internet. I only have problems when people starting talking about "proof" people are in love irl, and being creepy to the real people themselves.
