tbh anyone who claims that there isn't fandom bias against certain types of ships are either blind or willfully ignorant.

i see friendship pairs in media that would absolutely ping all of fandoms shipping buttons... except that one of them is black, or just non-white in general, so there's nothing.

but have two white-guys have the same dynamic, or even 2 secs of screentime and watch as fic will spawn.

and it happens, over and over.

it's really not a coincidence.

In the Psych fandom I used to ship Gus and Shawn, but Lassiter and Shawn were a much more popular ship. At the time I told myself it was probably because people like rival/enemy ships more than friendly ships but eventually I had to face the fact that if Gus were white the fandom would have been very different.

And that's not to say that Shawn/Lassiter isn't a good ship - it's the size of the disparity between the two that's the issue, and the pattern that exists with other fandoms

that's one of the ships i was thinking of actually, because i remember being so boggled by the size disparity between the ships. and i have no animosity towards anyone that liked shawn/lassie but really, that much of a gap?

there's also the mcu fandom and the numerous white-dude ships that outstrip any interracial ones, and i even like some of the white-dude ships but c'mon. there is no way tony/rhodey or sam/steve should be as tiny as they are in that fandom.

and one of the more recent examples i've seen of this is jake/nate from pacrim2, they literally have everything that fandom should eat up ship-wise: they were super-close before having a falling out, have a bit of the rivalry butting-heads dynamic going on, and jake literally calls him 'handsome and sexy'. they do have some fic so i won't call it a barren wasteland, but nowhere near as much as newt/hermann spawned after the first movie and it's just so... disappointing.

and i even like newt/hermann, but jeeze, you had a ship handed to you on a silver platter fandom and ignored it in favor of white-guys. again.

and people will always come up with excuses as to why people don't like these ships, while willfully ignoring all the white-dude ones that have the exact same dynamic but are popular.
