I guess I just don't get it in a fandom like Tolkien where there is every type of ship under the sun. You want sappy and romantic, there are plenty of options to choose from. Why go for the villains if you aren't interested in that dynamic?

I'd say it's because of the 'hot factor' if there's a lot of fanart or official art that depicts them as pretty-boys, and I know that Sauron was very good-looking at one point in his life(his whole life? Or does he turn after the fall of Numenor? I can't recall).

Otherwise the uh, less nice side of my brain posits that it's about attention more than actual love of the ship.

Or maybe they just pick their ships very strangely.

Post fall of Numenor, he loses his "fair form" though the fandom does debate a bit on what that means. But yes, he was originally attractive in canon and was known for using that to his advantage.
