OMG OP this is legit my biggest complaint about fanfic in general. I kink hard on problematic ships - but only if they're not romantic. It's almost impossible to find that kind of fic. I actually don't remember the last time I finished reading a fic. It almost always gets sappy, and I have to back-button.

I don't do age gaps, but I do have other kinks for really unhealhy relationships. And I get sick of fics portraying them as romantic and perfect and giving them happy endings. If I wanted happy endings, I'd read other pairings.

PWP?
I personally don't like the idea of Tony/Peter as end game because i really do like Tony/Pepper. But hell yeah, age-gappy sexy times.

I can't imagine Pepper being okay with a Tony who'd slept with Peter, though. I think if that happened, even if they were temporarily broken up, she'd be so out of there. So I don't think there is an in-character way to stick both those things in the same fic.

Eh, that doesn't really come into it for me. Just - plot what plot sex, devoid of consequences or deeper storytelling.

I'd honestly put that right smack in the middle of questionable things Tony had done. Yeah, it's not good at all and has a lot of different issues with it, but I honestly think bringing Peter to the fight in Civil War is much worse, and it's doubtful that Pepper doesn't know about that.

I hear you, OP. I'm currently writing age gap fic for an obscure book fandom because I couldn't find any for that pairing. I don't think making it a romance would really work, and frankly, I don't think it's necessary. People just seem to love the romance aspect of it. That or they can't think outside that framework.

I can’t speak for everyone and there are some romanticized “problematic” ships that creep me out (and some I ship), but for me, sex without romance or is somewhere on the border between “instant turn-off” and squick.

Okay, thanks for letting me know?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm generally okay with these things being romance as long as it's not "and then happily ever after."

Some romances are messed up by conventional standards and they can both be pointedly portrayed as messed up and also still romance. Part of the romance is in the fact that everybody on all sides acknowledges shit's fucked up but go ahead anyway facing whatever problems that may bring.

The happily-ever-after fics never do that though.

oh hell aw. the whole appeal of this ship for me is how Peter would fill Tony's need to be validated, redeemed, forgiven, acknowledge while totally recognizing that he's taking advantaged of an inexperienced person who hero-worships him and slowly comes to realize his idol is deeply flawed and insecure.

Off-topic, but Gankutsuou might be to your taste.

Oooh, thanks for the recommendation! I'll add it to my already far-too-clogged Crunchyroll watchlist.

My friends call this "canoe-ing". When you don't want them to be a relationship, you just want them to canoodle.

(And I totally feel you, I love my age gaps but I prefer it more predatory and fucked up not sweet and romantic)

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It really sucks when the fic for messed-up pairings isn't messed up. I run into the same thing with incest ships proclaiming their love to the world and...no thanks, not what I came for.

My preferred flavor of Peter/Tony would be more unrequited, with Tony being just shitty enough to take advantage of Peter's feelings in an unconscious way, but never sexually. I imagine you wouldn't find much of that either?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-10 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn! That's fucked up! The feelings part. I'm gonna have to use that, anon. Not for this particular ship, but I love my messed up ships, and I can definitely see some characters doing that.

Isn’t “happily ever after” for a pairing with this kind of age gap changing your BF’s diaper while in your 40s? What a fantasy~

(Anonymous) 2018-08-11 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
boy howdy there's an extremely fucked up Wade/Peter fic I'd like to recommend to you

(Anonymous) 2018-08-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all ears.
