I'm generally okay with these things being romance as long as it's not "and then happily ever after."

Some romances are messed up by conventional standards and they can both be pointedly portrayed as messed up and also still romance. Part of the romance is in the fact that everybody on all sides acknowledges shit's fucked up but go ahead anyway facing whatever problems that may bring.

The happily-ever-after fics never do that though.
