Meanwhile, I just wish that writers would actually describe a female orgasm the same way they describe male ones, and knock it off with the new-agey swirling pools of pleasure stuff.

I agree so much. It is like, they think women lose complete control of their minds and bodies when feeling pleasure while men just enjoy while thinking clearly and then move on. Somehow, I doubt orgasms are really that different between genders. Pleasure is pleasure.

Makes me think of that thing porn writers do where the male characters experience orgasms as intense pleasure within the penis, and the female characters experience orgasms as waves of pleasure that radiate outwards across their entire bodies. I asked on a porn forum whether this was actually a thing, and was informed that porn writers “don’t know shit about sex.”

I don't think most porn writers have seen sex with a woman who wasn't there for the money, much less experienced any. And they'e so obsessed with their dicks they can't imagine any pleasure outside of them.

I don't know about porn writers, but as a romance writer, just like how T.V. and books don't exactly copy how people speak in real life because it would just be awkward, writing about sex has certain conventions within genres to make it more.. palatable, I guess?

I mean, writing how real sex goes ends up with Yakety Sax playing in the background. Just like no one wants to see someone on the phone going "Yeah. Uh-huh. Yeah.", writing about getting limbs in weird positions, smacking your partner in the face, accidentally kneeling or lying on someone's hair, queefing, etc isn't sexy in print.

This. In romance novels, it's flowery because that's the convention and people are aiming for... well, slightly purple prose vs. gritty realism.

Have you read many romance novels? Seeing as how female readers are the target audience, they tend to focus on female orgasms and the female characters' POV during sex scenes. This doesn't necessarily mean that male orgasms get written realistically and female orgasms are all riptides of ecstasy, etc.
