For me it's not about an OTP, but rather the whole series. I know that shows like SPN and Sherlock are not great, but initially I enjoyed them and I believe that I'd still be able to enjoy them a lot more if I hadn't been exposed to such anti-movement as a reaction to the massive popularity. Things like Hbomberguy's criticism video on Sherlock are valid and raise good points, but I was able to enjoy the show in its earlier seasons despite the flaws. Now it feels kind of a drag to watch the shows after such an excessive hate.

I was went through a similar situation several years ago -- the ship I shipped (and wrote well, if I say so myself) started getting so much hate that it was easier just to walk away.

Since then, though I've decided that this just reinforces the bullies and rewards them for shitty behavior. Now I refuse to be harried away from things I like; I just pay the haters no mind and wait until they get tired and move on to something else (they almost always do).

This just...so doesn't bother me. I really don't give a shit about people hating my fandom or OTP as long as at least a few other people like it along with me. I'm usually into femslash pairings, though, and it's only been relatively recently that femslash pairings have had the whole shipwars/purity wankers/antis etc. so maybe that's why?

I can relate to this. My OTP (and indeed a whole race of aliens I liked on that show) kept getting hate long after the show was over, and about a year ago I finally more or less gave up reading/writing fic since all I got was very determined haters commenting about how horrible my OTP was, how horrible the whole alien race was, and how problematic. Thus, how bad I must be too :(
