I thought they were both stiff.

Same. Carrie sounded like she had difficulty talking, and I know there's rumors about old drug problems and maybe even throat surgeries but she sounded much less wooden in interviews so I feel like whether true or not that wasn't the problem. Either the acting or the directing with some prequel wooden syndrome, who knows. Was better episode VIII but maybe that's cause everything else felt more awkward in comparison.

Ford is so far from my type even when young it's somewhat weird to me (idk, something about his face looks a little goofy to me) but sometimes his acting works. Sometimes it doesn't, re: episode VII.

she certainly is now.

You're right that he doesn't have a lot of range, but he's still incredibly fucking good at what he does do. And it's not like it's an easy or common thing to be able to do, either.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
But he is so good in Bladerunner and Witness.

And even then he was only sexy as Indiana Jones.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Han Solo was an idiot but that doesn't preclude being sexy

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

I've always thought Ford was a mediocre actor who's screen charisma maked up for lacking acting talent. Kinda like Schwarzenegger who is absolutely not a great actor but nevertheless an entertaining performer.

Carrie has always bothered me since New Hope has lots of scenes where she does her angry smiley acting shtick which is just bad in my opinion. I don't think she had the poker face for acting in her youth.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, why do we even consider acting talent a more important skill than screen charisma in the first place?

I thought he was really good in a bunch of movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
The Fugitive
Witness
Working Girl (I was surprised at how funny he was)
Patriot Games (and Clear and Present Danger to a slightly lesser extent)
Star Wars (original trilogy)
The first three Indiana Jones movies
Air Force One

He was terrible in Six Days, Seven Nights, but that was an awful movie that should not have gotten made. I can't say I've been much interested in anything from this century that he's been in, but whatever.

I love Air Force One so much. Admittedly probably more for Gary Oldman than for Ford. But Ford is great in it.

I never saw 42 but I heard he was good in that, and playing outside of his usual type.

He is a terrific comedian with excellent timing and that's a real skill. But apart from that he does have a typecast "action guy" who can be good or awful depending on the other actors around him.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I sort of agree, but only because I think Jan Solo is a total Gary Stu.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think Mary / Gary Stus are more or less a standard, normal, unobjectionable genre convention in pulp adventure fiction.

Lmao nice try, JAN

While he’s certainly not the most talented actor in the world, I feel this is unfair. He got typecast a lot or let himself get so, but particularly in early or smaller work, he’s quite good. His quote about the delivery boy or whatever remains one of the wisest perspectives on acting, imo. So yes, when people started seeing Harrison Ford, they stopped seeing the characters he was playing. That’s not solely his fault.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
If you honestly think slurred lines and a slack jawed non-expression is good acting I'm not sure i trust your assessment of the quality of a person's acting very much.

You have a right to your opinion and it may even be correct. But I don't care.

Also screw that "when he was younger" noise, he is fine right now!

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I half agree, except Carrie isn't a great actress today, either, certainly not any better than she used to be.
