How did Disney screw up the process?

By hiring a guy with a taste for shocking, bad-taste humor and publicly visible controversial tweets, and then making a knee-jerk, panicked decision to fire him at the very first sign of negative publicity?

If they really cared that much about the brand and image, they could have not hired the guy in the first place. If they knew about the tweets, they could have had a plan for dealing with them, or tried to nip the issue in the bud beforehand. It's not like they haven't fired directors before. And even if they were totally blindsided, they could have taken some time to, like, go through a process, and figure out some easier, less controversial way to deal with the problem, and make a better statement.

Instead, they got totally spooked and ended up pissing off everyone while appearing completely spineless.
