I think I could have liked Willow if they hadn't fallen into the trap of writing her as the jealous best friend of the hot girl. She was so obsessed with being desired and powerful because she was insecure and compared herself to Buffy. When she was desired or powerful, she always took things too far and she never stopped to consider other people. Even though Tara was apparently the great love of her life, she didn't behave any differently with her.

Willow and Xander both failed to mature as characters after high school. It's like the writers forgot to have them grow up and be more aware and critical of their own actions. You can kind of see them both looking like they are in the later seasons, but instead of actually being more mature, they just became more critical of other people and felt superior in their own judgements.

I think Whedon's quickly degrading talent and vision also had to do with that.

It's like he became a different man after all the success and even though it's so cliche it's still sad.

His Wonder Woman script was unhinged, could not believe the same man who wrote one of my favorite heroines of fiction would have Diana talked down to and degraded by fucking canonically-chronic-damsel Steve Trevor and some army goons.

Not to mention cheating on his wife or writing comics!Xander hooking up with fucking team little sister Dawn! (Seriously I don't know how fans of the original series can read that dribble and not weep at the "new canon".)

Thank god Jane Espenson is keeping the BVtS legacy respectable and brilliant, she's the true icon honestly.

This thread honestly confuses me so much. Why all the Willow hate? Sure, she made a lot of mistakes (mostly in season 6). But so did everyone else at one point or another. And I fundamentally disagree with the idea that she never matured. She clearly did. Only Xander didn't.

High School Willow was an awesome example of what "Nice Guy" syndrome looks like on a woman. Her getting all snotty and possessive over Xander because she's always been there for him and therefore he should be dating her is gross, and the fact that Xander also sucks doesn't change that. Her cheating on Oz with him was also not endearing. Despite all of this, she is often treated as the moral center of the show by the other characters, because Joss Whedon is full of shit.

College Willow is an abusive girlfriend, is relatively nasty to and about a perfectly nice college pagan group because she thinks the only purpose of the traditions she's co-opting is to cast increasingly dark magic, is downright nasty to Anya because even though she doesn't want Xander romantically at that point she is unhappy seeing him date anyone else, and is a mediocre friend at best who is frequently unsupportive and tends to make everything about her. Despite all of this, she is frequently treated as the emotional center of the show because Joss Whedon is full of shit.

Then there is Season 6.

Don't get me wrong. Willow is a fascinating character and Alyson gives a great performance. But she kind of sucks as a person, which would be okay except that she is every other character's favorite person and is almost never called on her bullshit.

Wow. I disagree 100% with your interpretations. I honestly never even considered it remotely that way. But I guess I can see where you are coming from now. Still disagree, though.
