That would indeed have been awesome (and more appropriate age-wise)

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Roth is younger than Rickman, but he still would've been 40 around the time of the filming.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Weren't the Potters/Snape/Remus/Sirius supposed to be mid-to-late thirties at the beginning of the series? 40 isn't hugely over that age. I mean, they have college kids playing high school kids in a lot of stuff.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
40 is much more reasonable than 55 for the character.

I remember reading somewhere that he turned down the role because it conflicted with his filming Planet of the Apes. I hope that's not actually true, because to let go of the role of a lifetime for that heap would be dreadful.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It is true.
rudehannibal: (listening ears)

[personal profile] rudehannibal 2018-08-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That's honestly heartbreaking.

He may gave already been under contract for Planet of the Apes and couldn't get out of it.

I can see it.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Either him or Robert Carlyle for me.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
And Sir Sean Connery or Michael Caine for Dumbledore for movies 3-7 part 2.

Michael Caine would be great. Sean Connery can't do any accent that isn't his own and isn't that great an actor.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
eh

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but then all those young actors would have missed out on being mentored by Alan Rickman. I swear, when he died the thing that hit me hardest was how much those kids all seemed to love him. Which colors my perspective.

Really?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Why not for someone who wasn't good in their role?

Rickman didn't really play book!Snape at all. He played Snape way nicer than book!Snape, which has massively colored how people view the character. And, plus, he was way too old for the part.

ayrt

I think your issue there is more to do with the screenwriter and the casting director. Just because it didn't match Snape in the book, doesn't mean it wasn't well-acted. And I can name a few roles that were not well-acted.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Tim Roth is an undeniably excellent actor, but I loved Rickman. He played it just right, just ambiguous enough. Caveat: I only finally just watched all the movies and never read the books. I'm told there are huge chunks missing, and yeah, Rickman isn't age-appropriate but then neither is Sirius Black, and I didn't notice.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that Rickman isn't age-appropriate is actually the reason that Sirius & Lupin aren't. They had to cast someone who could roughly match Rickman's age.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I very much noticed with Sirius and a little with Lupin. I think the casting of Sirius is still my least favorite (by far) in the whole series. I don’t really have anything against the actor, he was just SO unlike what I’d envisioned.

How can you say he played it just right when you never read the books and can't compare his performance to the character JKR created? Movie!Snape doesn't resemble book!Snape much at all.

I love Alan Rickman and I was gutted when he died. I still miss his presence in the world. But there's so much about his version of Snape that's less interesting, less complex (for certain values of complexity), and just plain wrong. Although I also blame the screenwriters for that.

Tim Roth would have rocked Snape's bitterness and sharpness. He would have radiated intensity, played the malice pitch-perfect, and brought a wiry, spidery physicality to Snape. And he was completely capable of adding subtle layers of tragedy to the character's arc, always assuming the script actually bothered to address it instead of wasting screen time turning Snape into a comic relief character with no dialogue.

He was also much closer in age, only 9 years rather than 25 years older.

/dissatisfied Snape fan who really regrets that Roth wasn't cast as movie!Snape

AYRT

"How can you say he played it just right when you never read the books and can't compare his performance to the character JKR created?"

I can treat the movies as an independent work from the books and have an opinion on Snape's character therein a-ok. Thanks.

I would have loved to see Tim Roth as Lupin.
Not because I don't think Thewlis did a good job, just to see him and Gary Oldman working together again.
