Tim Roth is an undeniably excellent actor, but I loved Rickman. He played it just right, just ambiguous enough. Caveat: I only finally just watched all the movies and never read the books. I'm told there are huge chunks missing, and yeah, Rickman isn't age-appropriate but then neither is Sirius Black, and I didn't notice.

The fact that Rickman isn't age-appropriate is actually the reason that Sirius & Lupin aren't. They had to cast someone who could roughly match Rickman's age.

Ugh, I very much noticed with Sirius and a little with Lupin. I think the casting of Sirius is still my least favorite (by far) in the whole series. I don’t really have anything against the actor, he was just SO unlike what I’d envisioned.

How can you say he played it just right when you never read the books and can't compare his performance to the character JKR created? Movie!Snape doesn't resemble book!Snape much at all.

I love Alan Rickman and I was gutted when he died. I still miss his presence in the world. But there's so much about his version of Snape that's less interesting, less complex (for certain values of complexity), and just plain wrong. Although I also blame the screenwriters for that.

Tim Roth would have rocked Snape's bitterness and sharpness. He would have radiated intensity, played the malice pitch-perfect, and brought a wiry, spidery physicality to Snape. And he was completely capable of adding subtle layers of tragedy to the character's arc, always assuming the script actually bothered to address it instead of wasting screen time turning Snape into a comic relief character with no dialogue.

He was also much closer in age, only 9 years rather than 25 years older.

/dissatisfied Snape fan who really regrets that Roth wasn't cast as movie!Snape

I can treat the movies as an independent work from the books and have an opinion on Snape's character therein a-ok. Thanks.
