Re: Favourite Darkfic Tropes!
(Anonymous) 2018-08-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)Characters feeling themselves slowly sliding down the slope to evil, but feeling forced by circumstances to keep going. Characters realising that they've passed the point where they really care anymore. Characters who can't feel love properly, and know that, but who hold the twisted/stunted echoes they do feel close anyway. Characters nursing a hidden injury or corruption, knowing that it's killing or twisting them, but refusing to tell anyone until it's too late. Characters at that point just past despair where anything, no matter how horrifying, suddenly seems reasonable. Characters who clearly have no real idea anymore that what they've done/described/endured is absolutely horrifying to a sane person.
Characters who have someone try to save them, and fail, but they die knowing that at least someone cared enough to try.
Characters who live knowing that they failed everyone who didn't.
Guilt, survivor guilt, lack of guilt, survival of and conditioning to horror. Characters who do horrific things out of some strange, genuinely earnest desire to 'help', as best they understand the concept. Characters who do horrific things purely to survive, and hate themselves for it. Characters who gradually forget what it's like not to be horrifying. Characters who are confused or alarmed by small, basic acts of kindness or comfort.
IDK, I just generally like tragedy, psychological horror and explorations of people in extremity.
