Favourite Darkfic Tropes!

I want to write more darkfic, and I don't know what to write. What are you favourite dark/angsty tropes you like to read?

Mysterious diseases that wipe out everyone. Preferably of the mind altering variety (so you get some unreliable narrators as well).

I hate torture porn movies, but I love torture porn fics. But I prefer it when we get in character's heads and there is a lot of psychological stuff going on.

Along the same line, extreme hurt comfort. Where the ending has the person alive and getting comfort, but they are damaged physically and mentally and the fic portrays that realistically.

Villain wins AUs are fun, though it is hard to find decent ones (I don't read Sauron wins Aus anymore because they are all just Sauron rapes Aragorn or Legolas without any depth or anything remotely interesting)

Just, mental trauma in general. Characters losing loved ones, having to make difficult choices, or just suffering the consequences of the horrors they've seen.

Sacrifice. One character dies to save everyone else. Or someone dies to give the hero a chance to win. Things like that.

Hm, are you at all open to Wranduin fics? Because "Along the same line, extreme hurt comfort. Where the ending has the person alive and getting comfort, but they are damaged physically and mentally and the fic portrays that realistically" made me think immediately of a story by alternatedoom, the best Warcraft writer I know. nor can pleasure smile here (https://archiveofourown.org/works/4872040) is a devastating read with a gutpunch ending. (Most of alternate's stuff is much lighter; all of it is superb.)

Ooo, thanks. My familiarity with WOW comes from the movie and then reading things on the WIKI. But this sounds interesting enough that I'm going to read it anyway.

Seconding Alternatedoom. I'd recommend looking through all their fics, then. There are a number that might be of interest.

(Also, if you want to preface the story that was recced with one that will give you a better feel for the characters, I'd recommend In the Heart of the Kingdom. (It also happens to be my favorite Wowfic ever.)

My fave is when something terrible happens to a character in canon and fic authors take us on a wonderful angsty ride through the emotional suffering their friends have about it.

Long, drawn-out sacrifices, like characters knowingly condemning themselves to a life of misery, or slowly sacrificing pieces of their soul/life-force/health, for a cause they believe in. Sometimes having those sacrifices ultimately prove futile, especially if the character knew that and did it anyway because they felt they had to do something, however useless. Characters who love each other knowing they're going to kill each other. Mercy killings. "I will kill you before I let them take you". Going out in a blaze of glory, not because the glory means anything, but because you might as well.

Characters feeling themselves slowly sliding down the slope to evil, but feeling forced by circumstances to keep going. Characters realising that they've passed the point where they really care anymore. Characters who can't feel love properly, and know that, but who hold the twisted/stunted echoes they do feel close anyway. Characters nursing a hidden injury or corruption, knowing that it's killing or twisting them, but refusing to tell anyone until it's too late. Characters at that point just past despair where anything, no matter how horrifying, suddenly seems reasonable. Characters who clearly have no real idea anymore that what they've done/described/endured is absolutely horrifying to a sane person.

Characters who have someone try to save them, and fail, but they die knowing that at least someone cared enough to try.

Characters who live knowing that they failed everyone who didn't.

Guilt, survivor guilt, lack of guilt, survival of and conditioning to horror. Characters who do horrific things out of some strange, genuinely earnest desire to 'help', as best they understand the concept. Characters who do horrific things purely to survive, and hate themselves for it. Characters who gradually forget what it's like not to be horrifying. Characters who are confused or alarmed by small, basic acts of kindness or comfort.

IDK, I just generally like tragedy, psychological horror and explorations of people in extremity.

Yes to all of these. aI'm with you on tragedy, psychological horror, and psychological explorations of people during suffering.

All of these are so good, but I especially love everything mentioned in your first paragraph.
