Fandom vents/rants

I have a few so I thought I'd put them in one place. Anyone else feel free to share if you have some.

1) My one fandom friend who used to be strongly anti-RPF has now decided that it's totally fine to write fic about a male celebrity and a self insert Mary Sue OFC but shipping him with a male costar is "disrespectful" which I think is homophobic and hypocritical and idiotic.

2) My other fandom friend is not speaking to me at the moment because I dared to ship a pairing with a FOUR YEAR AGE DIFFERENCE because of a "power imbalance". When the pairing in question ARE IN THEIR LATE FORTIES/EARLY FIFTIES. *headdesk*

3) My latest ship is really obscure and the only fandom is, strangely, on Twitter. Part of me wants to join in because at least I'd have somewhere to discuss it, but there are a handful of people tagging the actors and saying cringeworthy, embarrassing shit and I just really don't want to be associated with that at all.

My vent is the stupid Star Wars fandom that is already hating on the new animated show just from a really short trailer. And the hate basically boils down to "I hate the new stuff".

Also I got into an argument with a fan who insisted his hatred of the newer Star Wars stuff was based on objective fact and that anyone who didn't hate the same stuff he did was just plain wrong. I hate fans like that. They are ruining the fandom.

I feel you, I was just loling at wank over Kerri Russel being cast, literally no one knows who/what her character will be and ppl are already hating her

Re: 2, has this person like... never gone out in the real world and interacted with real people? Because a four year age gap is SUPER common in reality. I mean, hell, my mom and my dad are four years apart and they've been married for over 30 years! There could be a power imbalance, but there can also be a power imbalance in a relationship between two people of the same age so?????

Seriously. My parents have been married 39 years and they're 5 years apart.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure her parents have a bigger age gap than that and she doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with their relationship. I have no idea where she got the idea.

#2 is ridiculous. Once both people are over 21/out of college, a 4 year difference is inconsequential.

Also, hello, people the exact same age CAN have a legitimate power imbalance.

So tired of seeing Voltron fans in their twenties throwing shitfits about how "I guess the showrunners don't care if people like me watch their show." No, you idiots, they don't IT'S A SHOW FOR TEN YEAR OLDS. I like cartoons as much as the next person but I recognize that when you get down to it no, these cartoons are not made for me as an adult fan. They are made for CHILDREN. No, the showrunners aren't going to make Klance canon because you stop buying merch (that is probably mostly fanmade anyway) because there are many children buying the toys, as they are the demographic. Heck, if I were the people running Voltron I wouldn't want adults watching the show either, the kids aren't the demographic sending death threats and running around the playground yelling that Voltron is CANCELLED because their slash ship that was never going to be canon didn't become canon.

It's a reboot of a show for ten year olds from the 1980's. The showrunners made it for nostalgic fans of that series like themselves to watch with their kids. Dreamworks only cares about selling toys to kids and has more power than the showrunners, so you're right in the long run. But the show as it was imagined wasn't intended to be just for kids. (In before I'm accused of being a Klance shipper; I'm not and I don't want any ships to be canon.)

Your friend would hate the hell out of me. I've shipped ten year age differences..................................when one of the people was a teenager. Now THAT is a power imbalance, though not the biggest one I've seen.

Yeah. I mean, I get being squicked by age differences when one character is a minor, but with a difference as small as four years, when they're both adults, especially when they're over forty? I just don't get it at all.

LMFAO @ that 4 year age difference squick

Does the “age gap” —pfft— pairing have an actual power imbalance as well? Like boss-employee, student—teacher, or something? Because otherwise a four year gap wouldn’t even register for me in real life after the people involved were out of their teens. And I don’t like RPF but your other friend is being hypocritical and probably homophobic as well as just plain creepy. And as for the fans tagging the actors—argh, no, why the fuck do people do shit like that?

Nope. They work together, but neither is the other's boss or anything. Honestly, I always think of them as the same age because they definitely act like peers/equals.

I have no idea! There are people being like "you should make out on screen haha" and (even worse) "when's the sex tape coming out?" and I'm just like what the fuck is WRONG with you?!

Friend no. 2 is an idiot. She'd probably have been that feckless chick 50 years ago who went to the priest to complain that my mother shouldn't have been marrying my father because mom was 8 years older.
