A lot of the time, it feels like paladins only even exist in D&D so that DMs can trick the paladin into falling.

As I understand it, while previous editions used alignment as hardline law for behavior, 5e tends more toward "they're more like guidelines than actual rules."

Also, as someone currently playing a paladin, if my DM tried that shit I'd oppose them out of spite.
