As long as I’m ranting, can I complain about how utterly ridiculous this whole “paladins can’t flee from battles against evil” thing gets? So paladins can’t flee even if they’re critically wounded, and paladins can’t flee even if they’re going to get reinforcements, and paladins can’t flee even if they’re fighting a freaking dragon and have no hope of winning, and if a paladin tries to flee anyway, they’ll be rooted to the ground by divine force. How Lawful Stupid can you get?

A lot of the time, it feels like paladins only even exist in D&D so that DMs can trick the paladin into falling.

the alignment system is stupid

As I understand it, while previous editions used alignment as hardline law for behavior, 5e tends more toward "they're more like guidelines than actual rules."

Also, as someone currently playing a paladin, if my DM tried that shit I'd oppose them out of spite.

TBH "paladins can literally never turn their back on a fight against evil" thing is a sign that the GM or player is either an idiot or an edgelord wanting to punish someone for playing "boring" lawful good.

A paladin shouldn't be just shrugging and going "sucks to be them" or abandoning a fight out of pure self interest, but any good GM will accept a paladin staging a retreat because the party's hopelessly outclassed, or deciding not to take a swing at the hideously powerful evil wizard where it might give them an excuse to raze the entire town, or taking one look at that dragon over there and deciding to go get some reinforcements and maybe a ballista or two in order to effectively deal with the giant death lizard.

Uh.....
I dunno what D&D *they* are playing, but we had a person who always played a Paladin, and that kind of shite was *never* part of them/their character/the game.

And this was eighties D&D.

Nobody actually uses that rule unless they're a dumbass rules lawyer who cares more about defeating their players than running a game.
