TBH "paladins can literally never turn their back on a fight against evil" thing is a sign that the GM or player is either an idiot or an edgelord wanting to punish someone for playing "boring" lawful good.

A paladin shouldn't be just shrugging and going "sucks to be them" or abandoning a fight out of pure self interest, but any good GM will accept a paladin staging a retreat because the party's hopelessly outclassed, or deciding not to take a swing at the hideously powerful evil wizard where it might give them an excuse to raze the entire town, or taking one look at that dragon over there and deciding to go get some reinforcements and maybe a ballista or two in order to effectively deal with the giant death lizard.
