I always wonder what people hope to accomplish with attitudes like this. It’s not like insulting a writer’s intelligence is going to change what they enjoy writing.

How is it insulting a writer's intelligence? Unless OP let those authors know their opinion, of course, but then I'd assume they wouldn't make a secret of it here.

Unless OP let those authors know their opinion,

How does that affect whether or not it's an insult? It's still an insult whether or not you say it to someone's face. I can insult people I've never even met.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The authors won't feel insulted, though, because they don't know?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s an unpleasant attitude that doesn’t reflect well on the OP. I hope they do keep it to themselves in greater fandom.

Honestly? I think it's pretty harmless. Everybody has their pet peeves after all. Mine's the phrase "Character X was bored", only to lead said character into some super-not-funny prank war - you won't believe how fast I back button from a fic when that one shows up. It's like a red flag to me. And I do think less of an author after encountering it.

+1

Seriously, we all have our peeves when it comes to writing.

If I see an author plop out an x Reader fic, I'll immediately think less of them, because they're invariably horribly written and always absolutely horrible, without exception.

Am I going to tell them this to their face? No, of course not.

They can get their jollies however they want to, but I'm going to judge them super hard from a distance where my opinion can't hurt them.

Reasonable people understand that all readers have personal preferences for what they like to read. It's not an unpleasant attitude unless they're rudely vocal about it and nobody who is sensible will be offended by readers having preferences.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's crossing the line a little bit if you imply that a writer is writing something because they're unable to write something better, rather than because it's their preference

I don't know if that's reading too much into OP's secret but I think that's kind of where people are coming from

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone has their own yardstick by which they measure what they think of as writing quality. You can disagree with that yardstick, but I don't see the point of getting offended by what other people consider good enough for them to read.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what was crossing the line into mean-spiritedness for me, but I guess I'm alone there. *SHRUG*

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
1) People are allowed to write what they want
2) Other people are allowed to express their opinion on that writing, so long as they don't pepper their opinions with abuse and/or threats.

Okay? Okay.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF

I didn't say people shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want.

I was wondering what people hoped to accomplish with #2. If the goal is just to vent and complain... cool, man knock yourselves out!

(Anonymous) 2018-08-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Disliking a specific trope isn't insulting an author's intelligence. Even doubting an author's abilities isn't the same thing as insulting their intelligence. It's really confusing where you're getting this conclusion.

Lol, found the author of soulbond fic.
