I can't get over one of her recipes being 'make toast and throw uncooked rice on it'

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That . . . can't possibly be true, right? Who the hell eats uncooked rice?

LOL, seriously? That would be way too crunchy AND bland.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This made me laugh so hard (but that might be the wine I'm drinking too). How do you even get a cookbook contract with a recipe like that?

Hipsters in general are the absolute worst.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is nowhere close to anything I would think of as a "hipster"

OTOH we're probably past the term having any meaning whatsoever

I agree with other anon, that isn't really what hipster means. Hipster is supposed to suggest you do things for the sake of being different, you hate mainstream, and it also definitely suggests a certain youth culture/fashion aesthetic.

Being on some kind of "weird naturalist" diet doesn't necessarily make you a hipster, especially if you're some middle-aged mom.

Hippie sounds closer to what she is than hipster. Or maybe hippie hipster? I dunno if there's a proper word for people like her, but I have met them in real life. They exhaust me.

had to go look this up. holy crap what an air head!

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to google this and holy shit. the Minnesota newspapers are savage (and rightfully so, go Minnesota). she's a supreme dipshit not just for putting out these shitty recipes but for not even owning up to the fact that she's advocating eating poisonous plants. like, the worst kind of rich white hipster pretending to live a poor lifestyle is one who won't even say "oh god I'm so sorry I didn't know those were poisonous please don't eat those!" but instead blames it on the universe being cruel to someone who's just trying to make life happier for everyone gawsh.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked up her Instagram and it's funny - she's soooo hurt by what happened and one day she'll tell her kids the "true story" of what REALLY happened:

Thanks for summarizing (now I don't have to waste any time googling).

Oleander, black nightshade, wild parsley, apricot kernels? What was she claiming was edible?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
She was advocating eating raw elderberries and morels, not sure what else.

Holy crap. Does she actually feed that shit to her family?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
She does kinda look like she's poisoning herself.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I like how her defense is "readers need to make sure they check plant identification for themselves," but the plants CALLED FOR IN THE RECIPES are the ones that are dangerous. You might be safer to pick the wrong plant!

This is gonna sound naive on my part but isn't it the publisher's responsibility for fact checking things like this before they publish?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
They don't. Publishers should, but they don't.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Legally, it's most likely to come back on the publisher, so they *should* be fact-checking, yes!

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wild mushrooms dipped in chocolate? I'll be impressed when you foraged thge chocolate.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Did she forage that bad bleach job too? I hate tearing into someone's looks but to claim you are some naturalist you wouldn't bleach your hair like that.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
To quote someone talking about a Christian college I foreget the name of that banned hair dye—“them’s God’s highlights.” Only almost certainly not.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-28 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
her arms are alarming to me. It might just be the picture but I watched my mother's arms end up looking a lot like that when she was on an unhealthy diet that dropped too much weight too fast off of her. (she's off it now and recovering but damn)
