Huh, really? I've read nothing but in-canon fic in that fandom. I don't recall seeing a single modern AU.

I was a fan of the book, so I joined a couple of fan comms on LJ when the movie came out, but all they ever posted were, like, coffee shop AUs and college AUs and for some ridiculous reason figure skating AUs

How bizarre.
Check out the fandom on AO3. That's where i've read some very good in-canon fic.

I think you may have given up on the fandom a little too early. I got into it a year or so after you, and by that point the LJ communities were about half canon era fic and half modern AUs. And in the years since, the canon era fic has easily become the majority. (A bunch of those are still AUs, but they're canon divergence AUs or canon era werewolf AUs or etc.)

Sorting by kudos on AO3 gets you really good fic in The Eagle, imo. If you're still interested in the fandom, you might want to check it out.
