Most people don't know enough about Roman Britain to write the setting confidently, and can't be expected to research it enough to write it convincingly which might take hours just to write a one-off fanfic or something. The most dedicated will, and props to those writers, but I wouldn't expect the majority of casual movie fans to do so.
I'm more curious why there aren't more easy-peasy similar-enough generic medieval fantasy AU settings of this! Grey Warden Warrior Marcus Cousland and Totally-a-Rogue Secretly-A-Mage Elf Esca the Reluctant Companion would be fun.

Check out the fandom on AO3. That's where i've read some very good in-canon fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-29 11:47 am (UTC)(link)Sorting by kudos on AO3 gets you really good fic in The Eagle, imo. If you're still interested in the fandom, you might want to check it out.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)I don't mind the modern AUs though. If they still have an interesting relationship, I'll read whatever. There are a couple of modern AUs that I love in that fandom because the authors used elements of their canon (movie more so than book) relationship.
