I get you but at the same time I wouldn't have expected any less (or should that be more?).

Most people don't know enough about Roman Britain to write the setting confidently, and can't be expected to research it enough to write it convincingly which might take hours just to write a one-off fanfic or something. The most dedicated will, and props to those writers, but I wouldn't expect the majority of casual movie fans to do so.

I'm more curious why there aren't more easy-peasy similar-enough generic medieval fantasy AU settings of this! Grey Warden Warrior Marcus Cousland and Totally-a-Rogue Secretly-A-Mage Elf Esca the Reluctant Companion would be fun.

I think there's an Uncanny Valley effect with AUs sometimes, where you have a setting that's close enough to the original source material that it feels weird to write it up as a proper AU, or not worth the effort.

That's true. Adding magic/fantasy to a "realistic"-historic-fictional Roman setting would make it pretty different though, at least to me.

if it were done right I think it might be kind of interesting to read a slice of life Roman novel where the gods were real.

The Republic era would have some interesting polytheist stuff! Empire era would get pretty complicated fast though, and then Constantine happens and that's a minefield...

I don't have too many fandoms I'd read fic for or anything, but the Eagle is one of them!

It could be interesting but you'd have to do a lot of research - or at least, I would only be interested personally if there was a lot of research. I think it'd be pretty easy to fall into a Percy Jacksonesque approach to mythology, and that's been done a lot at this point. But something that really tried to look at actual ancient Roman religion in practice as opposed to mythology would be really cool.
