DIY projects you've attempted...

What did you try to do? Did it work out? I'm going to have to strip some wallpaper and paint in the near future and even though I've helped someone else do it before, I still feel nervous about it.

it never firmed up properly. this annoyed me because I bake a lot and normally when I make cake icing it comes out great.

Aww, that's too bad. Marshmallow fudge icing sounds amazing, though!

That's what counts, IMO. When it comes to food, I'll take delicious over photogenic any day!

I make blueberry muffins a lot but I finally made some that weren't overcooked. (Basically by turning the oven temperature down, which is kind of obvious, but I'm still happy with them.)

I made blueberry pancakes for my roomie for the first time a couple of months ago. they came out pretty well except the batter was kind of thick; I added more milk to it but it was still thick.

Sanding the benches in my sauna. It worked out great and everything looks much better and cleaner now.

I'm sure that yours will go just fine, but if you feel unsure, could you first try it out on a small area?

Yeah, I think what I'll do is start with the small bedroom first. It won't be quite as noticeable if I mess it up... hopefully!

I helped my dad strip wallpaper once and it worked out fine. That was years ago, though, and I would be a little daunted at doing it myself now. We painted the room after that and unlike wallpaper stripping, I've used what I learned about painting multiple times since then. I feel confident about painting a room and I get good results.

How much prep do you do before painting, if you don't mind my asking? I read that I should use TSP to clean the walls before priming/painting first.

I always wash the walls (or trim or doors or cupboards) first. Real tsp isn't sold around here (the phosphate causes algae blooms or something) but I use a tsp substitute from the hardware store. I've read dish soap can be used in a pinch. I go over the surface again with clean water to rinse. Even when the wall looks clean before, the water definitely shows it was dirty.

I also patch cracks and nail holes, sand, and dust.

Sewed a huge handbag. It was... usable but bore clear signs of someone utterly new to design, I guess.

That's cool. I'm not very skilled at sewing OR design, but it looks like fun.

I replaced a toilet with my good pal Youtube. That worked out pretty well! Needed help moving it because I'm all of 100 lbs with the musculature expected out of an accountant, but, by golly, I did it.

I also learned the art of spackling corners when my dog - then puppy - decided she HAD to demolish about two feet of wall.

I started stripping the old wallpaper in a few rooms, then hit some spots where it's clearly not going anywhere without a steamer or something. So there's a few patchy half-done walls. :(

Last Christmas I knitted a Gryffindor scarf for my Harry Potter loving friend. I kept beating myself up over how it didn't seem long enough/neat enough, but he was absolutely over the moon and always wears it when the weather's cold, which is sweet.
