Not at all, but when you label classic, hand-drawn depictions of the Joker as "ugly", like I've seen others do, then you really don't find the Joker attractive, you find the actor playing the Joker attractive. That's what bothers me - they don't establish the difference between the two.

I know it sounds like I'm reading too much into this, but the new "fans" who don't care to read up on and understand the complexities of the Joker through the comics because he's "ugly" or "boring" frustrate me. Why call yourself a fan of the character if you're not willing to learn more about him? A fan of the Nolanverse Joker, sure, (Lord knows I don't pretend to know anything about Iron Man outside of the movie) but a fan of the Joker in general, are you kidding me?

Well, I always kind of thought Dini's version of the Joker was pretty hot as well. He's not awful (physically, anyway) in The Killing Joke either. As to Arkham Asylum...well, I love McKean and all his bat****, Django Reinhart-loving, pasting-things-onto-more-disturbing-things ways, but he doesn't do anyone sexy. (The actual art though...I saw an original from A.A. and almost started drooling.)

All that said:
I think if someone wants to find the Joker sexy in Nolan's version of him, and only in Nolan's version of him...that's alright. Movie!verse is its own canon, and it's perfectly acceptable to be into just that (case in point, my favourite comic character is Toad from the X-men. I got into him because he was so freaking hot in the movie. Now, eventually, I fell in love with all his other incarnations as well, but would I do classic!Toad? Nooooo. Modern!Toad or Ulti!Toad? ...depends who's drawing/writing him. Movie!Toad? Yes, until he couldn't hop. Figuratively speaking. But most of the very small Toad fandom never really moved past Movie!Toad. ...and that's okay. Because he's plenty to like on his own, and heck, he gets a lot less screen time than Heath!Joker did. /too long example)

I get that people hate the gushy, tweeny fangirls, but I'm just getting tired of these secrets that say things like "Ohmygosh he'd kill you and eat your babiez what's wrong with you for thinking that's hot?!?!" more than any other TDK secret.

You're more sick of them than the OMG HE'S SO HAWT secrets that they're written about?

Because I've seen far more of those.

Re: 126

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-08-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually, because the "he'd kill you" secrets are honestly much dumber, and they're reaction secrets to the first kind.

"HE'S SO HAWT!"
...mildly annoying, but hey, I agree. We all do. But I can get why you'd be reluctant to say that, especially if you saw the movie with friends/parents.

"SHUT UP, HE'S NOT HAWT AND HE'D TOTALLY KILL YOU!!!"
Much more annoying, because it just keeps it going that much longer, and why most of us agree that the Joker is hot, all of us know that yes, he's a freaking psychopath. It's not a secret, you're just angry.

The "hawt" secrets will die down a good week or two before the "shut up" secrets will. And the "shut up" secrets only rank about two steps below the "I'm so sick of seeing TDK/Doctor Who/Death Note secret" secrets in terms of...why are you posting this and making more of them-ness.

The thing that feels so weird to me about the love of Heath's joker is that his behavior a lot of the time reminded me of...like a demented child. To be honest, he didn't seem as calculating as the comic book joker (even though I suppose he WAS) because I was so distracted by how childish a lot of his movements were.

It squicks me a bit to think that people think that's hot.

Re: 126

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I can see that. I saw him as more psychotic trickster, and the childishness added to that element, because tricksters, really, are fairly childish (also, fairly easily tricked themselves, in most myths).
It sounds weird, but I saw him as...playful. Not in a good way, exactly, but, like a cat with a mouse playful. I like playful; it'll always make a character appeal more to me (which is why I always root for the programs in the Matrix).

Mark Hamill is my definitive Joker, tbh. Jack Nicholson was my first, but Mark Hamill is my favorite.

And I understand that part of the allure of fiction is escapism (you're free to enjoy situations and feel sympathy for people that would terrify you or conflict with your morals in real life), and being a fan of the Nolanverse only is A-OK, but the Joker is first and foremost a literary character. If you claim to be a fan of the Joker and talk about him as though you've been a fan for years, but you can't back it up... sorry, you iz dumb.

And like I said, I understand too well what it is to be a fan of a movieverse. I loved Iron Man because I love RDJ and he brought complexity to Tony Stark when before, I found Tony to be a very dull character. But even though I love the movie, I have no intention to read the comics, as I'm not a fan of Marvel comics in general. HOWEVER, I don't pretend to be an expert on Tony -just- from having seen the movie or read up on him on Wikipedia. I only know and care about -that- Tony Stark, and I would not plunk myself down in the Iron Man/Marvel comics fandom and act as though I knew everything about everything, which is what I find offensive about the new Batman and Joker fans.

TL;DR comment summary - EITHER STAY IN THE MOVIEVERSE FANDOM OR EDUCATE YOURSELF PLZ.

Ah. I think I'm really on the outside of fandom. I feel like maybe there's a secret Batman Fandom clubhouse that I haven't found yet. ...but I'd probably be scared to, since my only knowledge really comes from the Animated series and what graphic novels I've gotten from the library and all. (Because it's just a pain to try and figure out where to pick up in the monthly releases...)

Don't blame you on Tony Stark. I got some Iron Man comics as a kid...dead boring. I still haven't seen the movie (I want to...), but I find him best as the martini-swilling drunk in the Floating Hands cartoons.

Oh Hamill!Joker. I watched "Mad Love" today and was reminded how very much I love him. I'd pay good money to hear him sing the "Looney" song from the Killing Joke...or better yet, just have him read the whole thing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your knowledge being limited to the Animated universe - a lot of people regard that as the definitive Batman canon! If you do wanna read more graphic novels, though, I linked someone else who replied to me to a page with a ton of .cbr files.

Oh the Iron Man movie is AMAZING! I think Tony is an unlikable character (the arrogance, the womanizing, the substance abuse), but RDJ manages to make him charming enough that you can forgive it. I believe the movie comes out on DVD toward the end of September, if you'd rather wait to rent it. :D

Mark Hamill is my definitive Joker

Mine too. I also like the few brief moments he's in Neil Gaiman's graphic novel Black Orchid because he actually *tells jokes*, like this gem: What do you get when you cross the Atlantic with the Titanic? Halfway! And of course no one in Arkham Asylum thinks he's funny.

I just realized something: I've read the classic comics, A Death in the Family, Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, The Further Adventures of the Joker, the animated series, several of the Batman movies (Mask of the Phantasm ftw), and yet I don't consider myself a fan. Weird.
