Just so it's clear, I always have respected him; his recent actions to put an end to PETJA have just enhanced that respect. Because he's not as dumb as those guys thought it funny to imply ~~(yay, sketchy syntax!)~~, he probably realized doing this would have unpleasant repercussions, but wasn't fazed by that prospect and did what he felt he had to do. That's balls, if nothing else.

'Course, my stance on this may or may not be influenced by the fact that I always found the whole PETJA ~*~joke~*~ completely tasteless and offensive. YMMV, obviously.

I mean, yes, everyone has their own brand of humor, so I can understand that you didn't think it was funny. I also understand if he didn't think it was funny, which is mostly likely the case (of course, I know almost nothing about it, but this is just my POV). But the respect had to go both ways. Just because he didn't think it was funny doesn't mean C&Ds are in order. I'm not mad at him for what they did (well, okay, I am, but I'll get over it) but I think it's the way they did it.

Respect goes both ways, indeed. I see your point; and completely void of context, C&D'ing any community of fans isn't a very nice thing to do.

Context is indispensable, however. And there are many ways to look at this thing where you wouldn't necessarily see the offending material's authors' respect of Jensen Ackles in the first place.

As someone who has been in and around internet fandoms for nearing a decade, I know it wasn't very apparent to me when I stumbled upon said material.

It's a sad thing, all of it; but I cannot and will not withdraw support for somebody whose reaction I understand and agree with, over friends I feel were always in the wrong, no matter how dear they are to me (and they are. Hence the secret, heh.)

I'm going to sound stupid, but yeah, I never thought of it that way. I mainly thought that only the people who were participating in PETJA were going to be extremely interested in the material. To be totally honest, I wasn't 100% behind everything PETJA was doing, but it was their choice.

What I still don't quite get is why you respect him more for what he did. I understand not being angry or upset with him, and not withdrawing support, but why is what he did such a compliment to his character?

Not the OP, but I agree with them. I think anyone standing up for themselves and others, especially someone in his position, knowing that it would cause him to lose some fans, is deserving of respect.

Yeah, that's pretty much my thoughts exactly. And you didn't sound stupid, barkinmad. It's always nice to exchange points of view without animosity, even if we can't all see eye to eye.

No kidding. You expect him to believe that he is respected by the people running a website that belittles him as well as people who suffer from learning disabilities? Sounds like he gave them the exact same brand of "respect" that they gave him.

I visited the website before it was shut down. I saw the page with the disclaimers. That doesn't mean that everyone who came across that site would see that page. I was bored the night I found the site, and I ended up looking at every single page. Which means I also clicked on the hit counter. It said that the average IP clicked on two pages of the site and stayed at the site for under three minutes. Sounds like a lot of people that probably didn't see the disclaimers.

Look, I'm not saying you're wrong about sarcasm. it's a perfectly acceptable form of humor. But it doesn't work if people don't KNOW it's sarcasm. Just like it obviously didn't work for Jensen Ackles. He was within his right to ask for it to be shut down, just as the site owners were within their right to fight him. They did what he asked, probably because they realized how tasteless the site was in the first place.

Just because people didn't see the disclaimers doesn't mean they weren't there. And it also depends on how much you want to trust an internet site about an actor. If you read that Paris Hilton had Justin Timberlake's baby, would you believe it?

I agree that it was within his right to shut us down, I know that. But I hold the right to think that it was an overreaction and be angered by it. And please don't speak up for other people, you have no idea why they decided to shut the site down, and neither do I.

Okay. Well, it seems we are at an empasse because I think it wasn't an overreaction and applaud him for the action taken. I humbly agree to disagree.

I've actually been discussing this in another thread with someone else, but I think the gullible people weren't the ones looking at the site. I've never encountered anyone who'd seen the site and actually believed that's what he had, but of course my experiences don't speak for all. Mostly I was under the impression that other people found it offensive, which is understandable.

Honestly, I believe in good faith that you were; but I would have to disagree with your definition of "clear." (And not just based on hearsay, I might add. I saw the website in full, PSAs, etc.) What I think happened is, the authors credited the general public* with far much more discernment and capability for comprehending second degree statements than your average fan or www user possesses.

(* I know, I know, but there wasn't anything private about the website and YouTube videos)

Also sad: no one thought to take this possibility under legitimate concern. Or worse, they did and thought it wouldn't matter enough to reconsider some of the things they were writing/videos they were publishing. :\

IA with the OP. From everything I've read on LJ and FW, he had every right to do what he did. I'm not vapid enough to believe the man can do no wrong, but here, I agree with what he did...or rather, had his attorney do on his behalf.

I've seen people upset with the way it was done and it makes me wonder how they expected it to be done? A C&D is pretty simple stuff, TBH. If that's all it was, while scary for the non-legal people in the world, it's not the worst thing that could have been done.
