[Revolutionary Girl Utena]

(Anonymous) 2018-09-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Anthy was kintsukuroi.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She was just so creepy. That anime was so insane I had no idea what I was supposed to think about Anthy after all, especially when the series constantly is telling you not to trust her.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an understandable view. The important thing in the show is how Anthy took action after Utena "broke the shell," not really her feelings about it.

I personally think Anthy's love for Utena helped the process of getting over her twisted love for Dios, as well as opened Anthy's eyes to how much agency she actually had.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaaah. I just... never liked Anthy at all. I felt for her, and her situation was truly horrific, but I never liked her or believed she loved Utena.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair. Anthy has a lot of shit she needs to work through before she can enter a healthy relationship with anyone anyways. Maybe her search for Utena will give Anthy the time and space to find out who she is so she can properly figure out Utena's place in her heart, even if it's just someone she's grateful to.

ia

I'm not sure you were really supposed to, though? There's a lot of intentional ambiguity in Utena, and a lot of layers of betrayal and manipulation.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think she loved Utena enough. Enough to leave Dios, to leave the school, to make the first step towards breaking out of the toxic cycle she existed in.
Enough to actually become a better, not-terrifyingly-manipulative person? Enough to build a healthy relationship with Utena?
Who knows. But for the place where the story left her... I think it was enough.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I think it has the potential to become a healthy relationship in the future once she's done some soul-searching and figured herself out, but for the time being, it was enough to get her to break out of her chains, and that's a big step.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Anthy has a chance to be her best self, which she didn't allow herself before. That's enough.

Agreed. Anthy still has a lot of healing and growing to do, but I like to think it was her love for Utena that enabled her to take the first steps in that process, and that by the time she and Utena are reunitied they'll both be in a much better place mentally and emotionally.

At the end when Anthy leaves on her own, that is the first time that I really felt respect for Utena. I mean, I wanted to like her as a character, and I understand that she was bound and subservient throughout the majority of it, but in a way every character was bound in some way. Utena even at the end was bound and her hands tied. So the end gives a little bit of closure in that regard, you see everyone getting on with their lives.. and then Anthy decides to go find Utena.

It's the only grain of hope you get and yet with the scope that Utena tried to tackle it, it makes you think that the small things are indeed the things that make or break you.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't the whole story about some twisted limbo-type afterlife? Possibly created by Anthy's own psychosis/witchcraft?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
That fits the movie more than the TV series imho.

I might be conflating them a little, but the show itself was pretty otherworldly, too. I remember constantly getting the sense that something was off about it. I am pretty positive it was never intended to be read as a "normal" world (sans swordfighting), especially with Anthy's magical manipulation of everything and the fact that she and her brother technically died hundreds of years prior.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus the fact that no one really leaves campus except in gag episodes, there's a massive disconnect between characters and their parents, and of course Utena seems to die at the end and yet Anthy wants to leave campus to go find her. It isn't like Utena ran off to London or something.

Ohtori Academy was a closed little world ruled by Akio but it was definitely a physical place in the real world.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you say definitely?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
... because I took I have a T-shirt that says "I toured Ohtori Academy and all I got was this lousy T-shirt!"
