Wasn't the whole story about some twisted limbo-type afterlife? Possibly created by Anthy's own psychosis/witchcraft?

That fits the movie more than the TV series imho.

I might be conflating them a little, but the show itself was pretty otherworldly, too. I remember constantly getting the sense that something was off about it. I am pretty positive it was never intended to be read as a "normal" world (sans swordfighting), especially with Anthy's magical manipulation of everything and the fact that she and her brother technically died hundreds of years prior.

Plus the fact that no one really leaves campus except in gag episodes, there's a massive disconnect between characters and their parents, and of course Utena seems to die at the end and yet Anthy wants to leave campus to go find her. It isn't like Utena ran off to London or something.

Ohtori Academy was a closed little world ruled by Akio but it was definitely a physical place in the real world.

Why do you say definitely?

... because I took I have a T-shirt that says "I toured Ohtori Academy and all I got was this lousy T-shirt!"
