Eeeehhh... Things don't look bright for the show. Don't get your hopes up.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but aww. :( I really like the show too and want it to do well, but I must admit that I don't see a lot of buzz around it.

Source?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP! I actually just finished watching the newest episode (ouch, my heart) and I'm still low-key shocked it got an adaptation at all. I remember reading the manga back in the day and wanting an anime adaptation so bad, so it's awesome to watch the anime now (even if it means putting up with Amazon's shitty subs) and I hope it ends up being a big success.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Most recent episode (10) was so sick! ♥♥♥

Amazon's subs are noticeably not great. Like, sometimes the grammar is bad and it seems they aren't translating the Japanese totally accurately. Oh well, simulcast is bestcast.

Ep. 10 Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
It was definitely sick! <3 My emotions were on a freaking roller coaster the whole time, but the bit where Ash walked into the room where they were dissecting Shorter and saw his corpse on the table made me feel so ill. The part where he shot that bastard doctor was cool, but damn was it depressing.

Oh, the Shorter bit was awful but at the same time, I'm glad it happened, because it was sort of liberating too? Rather than just popping Shorter out of the game and moving on with the story, his death had a chance to be mourned and the characters cared deeply about giving his body final rites. And he was avenged, too. It was a nice send-off for him.

Is it only on Amazon?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Amazon's where it's available legally, but you could probably find it elsewhere.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Amazon Prime, yeah. It's being simulcast.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they canon gay, or is it not officially stated like in the manga?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So far, it's sticking really close to the manga, so no canon gay as far as I know.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they already kissed on screen once (even if it was all part of Ash's keikaku).

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
And the kiss was a lot more involved than it was in the manga.

Curiously

(Anonymous) 2018-09-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorta interested in the anime. There's been a lot of buzz in fandom about it.

At the same time, a pretty prevalent gay anime dude on twitter talked about how much he hated this type of story.

So I'm just like, not sure. I'm not a tragedy for tragedy's sake kind of person. And the source material is pretty old, and it might not have made the transition into a more modern setting well.

Ehh, why should one anime fan affect your opinion one way or the other though? Just because he's gay? I'm gay and I fucking love this show.

NA

I read it as saying that this guy is how they found out about the tragedy aspects of the story, which is a potential dealbreaker for them, and that him being gay matters in context because readers/watchers who aren't gay are less likely to pick up on frustrating or depressing trends in stories about gay people.

But I do specifically want to say that yes, actually, it's reasonable for someone's opinion to be influenced by someone else's "just" because that someone else is gay. It's not that a gay person saying "this is bad" is more important than a gay person saying "this is good," it's that a gay person saying that it's anything is more relevant than someone who isn't gay giving their opinion on something specifically related to depictions of gay people.

I realise I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who read the Banana Fish manga after having it recommended as a really good story about gay men, but without any heads-ups that it does in fact end with major character death and that the author very firmly insists that Ash is straight and it's not a romance. So I'm kind of on this unnamed guy's side in that I am also sick of stories that end tragically and/or get major relationships no-homo'd and I'm particularly bitter about the circumstances under which I read Banana Fish. And besides that I can easily believe that this guy is the first person the subthread OP came across who talked about one or more of those aspects, because my experience was that multiple people would toss out casual plot spoilers in their recs but avoid mentioning the actual ending. That may be influencing how I read the subthread OP's comment too.

(I, personally, would not suggest Banana Fish unless I knew that the person I was talking to would be totally okay with me spoiling the whole thing for them. And even then what I'd say would just be "It's probably technically good and a lot of people like it, but I hated it because of the circumstances under which I read it and I can't judge it on its own merits," which is not an actual recommendation.)

OA

basically this

Re: Curiously

ayrt

I mean, there's being aware of a larger trend of gays getting iced in media... and then there's looking at individual stories and taking them for what they are independently. Banana Fish is a heavy action-drama thriller about crime syndicates and drug wars. It's going to be rough, not because of the gayness, but because of the genre. As a fellow gay person, I cannot stand when stories are torn down by critics by strangling them with ill-fitting trope accusations. I don't think I've seen a single epic action drama that includes gayness that doesn't result in social media activist outcry, because somehow "hey, let's not always kill off gay characters because they aren't convenient anymore" has become "gay characters can NEVER DIE OR EXPERIENCE DRAMA OF ANY SORT OR ITS HOMOPHOBIC."

As much as I'm enjoying the anime and enjoyed the manga, I feel that the story did not age very well and there are a few parts that make me cringe. There's some problematic dialogue too, but apparently the dialogue suffered from a mistranslation issue, so IDK. If you watch it, just know that you're going to be in for a world of pain if you get attached to anybody.

I have not known the anime has been already aired and read the manga ages ago plus the whole ending translation was botched for me anyhow (they married the wrong characters xD). However, there is a chance anime is not going to be a tragedy as the author stated they hated the ending and they done it as a response to publisher not letting them end (or something similar). The manga essentially was supposed to finish a few scenes earlier sooooo not really a deliberate example of 'bury your gays' . I do get the dude though - it is annoying same as deliberate 'queerbaiting' is.

This is incorrect. The author has actually said - repeatedly - that the plan was always to end the story that way, and that external circumstances made her briefly consider changing it but in the end she decided not to. She's also said that Ash is straight and that Ash and Eiji would never have gotten together.

No, she didn't. She said partly she killed Ash because of River Phoenix's death affecting her (whom Ash was based on design wise) and because she thought as a "murderer" he couldn't live anymore.
