Well, the predators are specifically eliminated to make hunting better for the hunters. And anybody who tries to reintroduce wolves, etc., for a healthier overall ecosystem faces the wrath of farmers, ranchers, and hunters, even when it's proven that everything works better when the predators are allowed to do their job, which is eliminate and cull the weak and sickly animals. That's specifically what hunters don't want to do. They want the healthy animals to eat, or as a trophy.

The deer populations suffer in this way. A long, slow death of disease instead of a quick take-down by a predator, and the removal of the best genetics for future breeding.

Basically I'm against guns for hunting as a "population control" method because hunters don't adequately control population. It's a hobby and an "I'm a big man" thing for most hunters. And a way for states to earn money selling licenses.

Control of animal populations should be 1) bring back the predators you fucking weak ass cowards, and 2) actual experts who will cull the appropriate animals in the appropriate amounts, not try to get something nice looking to put on their walls.

The reason animals need "population control" is because humans have very carefully and studiously removed the natural cotrols and fucked every thing up. And now we "need" hunters, to make it even fucking worse.

I have strong feelings about this ....

That's certainly a thought that has merit. But, it ignores the fact that in many places (several US states and entire countries) the current deer population is made up primarily (or entirely) of the descendants of imported deer. In some cases, it's because naturalists decided to repopulate a failing or extinct population of deer with hardy stock from out of state into areas where there are few or no natural controls. In other cases, it's because sportsman started their own herds because they wanted something familiar to hunt.

Either way, the problem is man-made from the onset. Humans, as the most populous apex predators left in these areas, actually are the most natural control to this problem, unless you prefer the other natural solution of letting the deer ravage the landscape until they slowly starve themselves and competing herbivores out. It also ignores some basic ecological facts about predators, primarily that in a healthy ecosystem, pack hunters don't choose to eat sick and weak animals because that would make them sick and provide lower quality meat compared to the caloric expenditure involved in taking it down. Predators will pick off weak or sick animals if they're desperate or if they're hunting alone. Pack hunters, like wolves, don't need to settle for the dregs and can take down big, healthy, calorie-dense animals. Think about it: if they only took down the sickly, weak animals then they'd be useless as population control because those animals are either past their prime or unlikely to reproduce because of their weak, sickliness.
