Do you really think a good live-action Cowboy Bebop is impossible? Seriously, it's probably the single easiest animated property I can think of to make in live action. Hell, they pretty much already did.

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
except firefly is not cowboy bebop.

there are going to be certain expectations riding on the back of making a live action from a very popular (and with good reason) anime. think of all the movie adaptations of comics and cartoons you've seen and how many have missed the mark horribly as opposed to hitting it square on.

Re: 106

No, they aren't the same, but they're pretty damn similar. Swap out the soundtrack, change which side of the law the protagonists are tenuously on, and you're 60% of the way there.

I can think of a lot of comic and cartoon adaptations that in fact do quite well! I prefer to hold off judgment on any given movie or adaptation until I actually have some information to go off of. Particularly when it's an adaptation of something that would lend itself so well to live action. That way, I don't look like a judgmental asshole if it turns out to be really awesome.

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way with adaptations and giving them a chance. sadly, I've been more disappointed than pleased with the way things were handled.

Constantine, anyone?

but you're missing the point. the point is not that there is something that was kinda-sorta like it but the fact that Spike is such a complex and well-loved character, people are not confident that an actor will be able to play him as he should be played (read: as each individual fan thinks he should be played). it's going to be entirely subjective and not as easy a task to sway those fans.

Constantine was a watchable film if you ignored the fact that it was supposedly based on Hellblazer.

...I think you're missing the point there because that last paragraph had absolutely nothing to do with anything I was saying.

Re: 106

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we are worried the actors will not live up to our expectations. I know I have extremely high expectations for this if it comes to happen, and I can't think of any actor who would give Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ed justice.

Plus, if Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kanno aren't on board? The studio can just forget bringing in the anime fans as even a potential audience.

The world is full of excellent actors, many of which you have never heard of. How about we hold off on the criticism until we have some actual hard data?

Re: 106

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll go watch some superhero movies that fucked up the comics and alienated the fans of said comics. Gotchya!
pikabot: (gar!simon)

Re: 106

[personal profile] pikabot 2008-08-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Or you could watch some of the excellent superhero movies that kept true to the spirit of the original and weren't horrific failures, and were embraced by fans of the comics. Well, some of them. You can't please everybody.

This ttitude is seriously puzzling me because in superhero fandoms when we hear news of a new movie being made, our first reaction is not 'Oh god, oh god, they're going to fuck it up'. It's 'Oh, really? Who's playing Batman/Superman/Spiderman/etc?'.

Re: 106

Anime fans are obviously different in that respect... probably because we haven't have several incarnations of the same characters. Even the Gundam franchise makes up new characters for every almost every new series.

Clearly you've missed the part where they didn't start appearing until after there was actual casting decisions and a trailer and shit to go on.

I mean, obviously there are always going to be people who assume that nothing can ever do justice to the original, but it's not the prevailing attitude like I'm seeing here.

how about you not try to blow sunshine up our asses. if you want to be positive and hope for the best, more power to you.

some of us don't hold a lot of faith in what Hollywood will do to it based on our opinions of what they've done in the past. we are in a holding pattern, waiting to see.

Good to know people care! Although actually I'll probably never post about it because god I am horrible at making reaction posts. I still haven't done one for the Avatar finale and that was like a month ago and rocked my cock off.

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-13 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
With animation, a studio can make the unreal possible. The actor that plays Spike will never be as tall, move as quickly and fluidly, have the same inflection, or the same subtleties. The point is, Spike and the Bebop crew were meant to be animated, which is why CB wasn't originally live-action.

And have you seen Goku from the Dragonball movie? Tell me the actor doesn't look ridiculous. Anime doesn't translate well into live-action... just think of how unrealistic the characters look--the impossibly styled hair, the large eyes with a tiny nose, etc. Anime is too stylized to translate well, if you ask anyone who's been a fan of anime before its counterpart movie was released.

The point isn't that they can pick the proper music (which for CB will be easy, seeing as the whole series revolves around the blues/jazz vibe), and it's not about finding the right actor (because you're missing the point--I don't care if someone has the acting chops to pull off a character, the point is that it's impossible to be totally faithful to that character).

Anyways, as far as actors go, it's been said that Keanu Reeves will be Spike. NOW tell me that it's not going to get fucked up.
pikabot: (hiyori)

Re: 106

[personal profile] pikabot 2008-08-14 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The Keanu Reeves rumor is baseless, and comes entirely from the fact that the producer likes casting Keanu in his projects.

YOu're right, the Dragonball movie looks horrible. One of the many reasons for this is because Dragonball is a property that translates horribly to live-action. People move and bend in impossible ways and do things like shoot energy out of their hands that is going to look silly in live-action no matter what you do.

Cowboy Bebop is a lot more grounded. There isn't any of that wacky, bizarre shit going on. It is in fact a property that would translate quite well to a live-action presentation.

You're right in that it wouldn't be exactly the same as the original. And I've never said it would be, and that's because that is impossible. That's why they call it an adaptation, not a one-to-one conversion. Do you think The Dark Knight was exactly like the comics? It wasn't. And yet look at all the reams of secrets blowing their load over it.

[EDIT] I notice I'm getting an abnormal number of anonymous replies to this comment. Am I talking at the same person over and over?

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
No, that one you replied to was my first comment to you.

The Dark Knight being popular (regardless of the fact that it's very unfaithful to the cartoon/comic) is exactly my point in making the secret. The CB movie may be "popular", ie successful, like TDK... but to Batman purists (of which I am one) there are many flaws in TDK and I would say that I'm upset at the storyline in general, as well as some casting choices.

While not every adaptation is absolutely terrible, none are perfect, and the average is mediocre at best. And the fandoms have been overrun with the squeeing-fangirl type, the trend-followers who demean their fandom simply by being in it, and ruining an otherwise perfect creation with their tendency to obsess over the flavor of the week.

To me, CB isn't a trend or flavor of the week, it's a very meaningful series that has changed my life, and I relate to the characters on a very personal level. Some of the greatness about the series is that not everyone knows of it... although it's very popular in the anime community (and somewhat beyond) I enjoy it in the same way one would relish a secret alcove on the beach or the view from a mountain that's not often climbed. Once the tourists discover your secret location, you feel sold-out, emptied, and commercialized.

On a whole, I just hate what Hollywood does to the original product, and I'm tired of the commercialization of every niche there is.

Whoo, purist elitism and indy elitism in one go. Good job.

Re: 106

(Anonymous) 2008-08-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
As opposed to enjoying any movie that's meant to appeal to the largest number of people, yeah. Maybe I don't usually agree with the majority of consumers out there, but I see no problem in the way I feel about anything meaningful to me. Don't get me wrong, I actually thought TDK was the best Batman movie so far, but as far as anime goes, I enjoy mine unmolested by the film-industry machine.

I think that good anime naturally appeals to a specific audience, and it should be left at that. What's the purpose of adapting it to live-action, other than making it appeal to a mass number of people and thusly generating more profit? I'm quite against Hollywood doing this, because it's essentially betraying the fans who sought it out in the first place, because they enjoy anime.
