It's really bizarre to me because fanworks absolutely are seen as a product and consumers feel a growing sense of entitlement to fanworks, but consuming fanworks is somehow simultaneously viewed as a favor to the creator. Fanfic is such a hot commodity that people with unpopular favorites view themselves as borderline oppressed because they don't have as much fic as Destiel fans do, yet the people who produce it are supposed to be grateful that someone clicked on their fic at all. Really, really weird. If it's so important to them you'd think they'd try to foster a sense of community.
