That's a highly unflattering assessment of fandom, but I'm hard pressed to argue with it. IME, people tend not to leave long reviews these days, for various reasons. Fandom feels more like a product that is consumed by the audience without necessarily the community connection there was before. I don't feel as though readers really appreciate that there's another human being writing their fic and it might be nice to acknowledge them if you enjoy their work. Somehow that's seen as entitled...but getting hours of free entertainment and never saying thanks isn't. The kudos button is easier, faster and for a lot of people, clicking it is all the connection they want with creators.

It's really bizarre to me because fanworks absolutely are seen as a product and consumers feel a growing sense of entitlement to fanworks, but consuming fanworks is somehow simultaneously viewed as a favor to the creator. Fanfic is such a hot commodity that people with unpopular favorites view themselves as borderline oppressed because they don't have as much fic as Destiel fans do, yet the people who produce it are supposed to be grateful that someone clicked on their fic at all. Really, really weird. If it's so important to them you'd think they'd try to foster a sense of community.
