agreeing that fandom just doesn't comment as much or as in depth as they used to. Its an across the board thing and I'm not sure what happened to kill off that habit/reaction in readers. Maybe the kudos button because you can still show you like it but with less effort?

also, younger fans, generally speaking, like younger written stuff. They're not going for good writing, they just want two dudes snowed in in a cabin with only one blanket. They'll get more picky the more fanfic they read as they go on but the young ones new to fandom tend to be the most vocal and likely to leave comments (not saying the older ones don't but the older ones also tend to take more time on their comments because they want them to say something so their comments are fewer between whereas the younger fans happily drop screeching tears and keep going immediately).

I mean, granted, all creativity suffers a little once you start putting rules on it but probably not the point it really ruins things. You might be writing more boring things but chances are high you're just writing things that have more investment involved. ie. its not you, its the fandom

That's a highly unflattering assessment of fandom, but I'm hard pressed to argue with it. IME, people tend not to leave long reviews these days, for various reasons. Fandom feels more like a product that is consumed by the audience without necessarily the community connection there was before. I don't feel as though readers really appreciate that there's another human being writing their fic and it might be nice to acknowledge them if you enjoy their work. Somehow that's seen as entitled...but getting hours of free entertainment and never saying thanks isn't. The kudos button is easier, faster and for a lot of people, clicking it is all the connection they want with creators.

It's really bizarre to me because fanworks absolutely are seen as a product and consumers feel a growing sense of entitlement to fanworks, but consuming fanworks is somehow simultaneously viewed as a favor to the creator. Fanfic is such a hot commodity that people with unpopular favorites view themselves as borderline oppressed because they don't have as much fic as Destiel fans do, yet the people who produce it are supposed to be grateful that someone clicked on their fic at all. Really, really weird. If it's so important to them you'd think they'd try to foster a sense of community.
