Please help restore my faith in humanity

Someone stole a charity box from work today. Not the plastic cylindrical one that you chain to the till, but one of those Cancer Research pin badge boxes with a slot for donations. The badges were super cute and were selling really well, so we'd raised a lot of money.

I am seething. We get our fair share of shoplifters but stealing a charity box? Really? FS, if you have any feel good stories about people doing good deeds or acts of kindness, please post them.

Share the story on FB or with local news. That should inspire people to donate again and more.

That's an awesome idea. I've written up a draft to submit to the local newspaper tomorrow. We're a pretty quiet town and not a lot happens down here, so hopefully they'll run it and raise awareness. I'm worried he might try it again somewhere else. :(

I'm a cashier and at the end of last month I had a lady and her son in front of me. She was buying groceries. It was all essentials, really. Nothing fancy or expensive, but she still didn't have enough money and was really embarassed and sad and I felt so sorry for her, but I literally couldn't do anything for her... but as she was about to decide which things to leave at the store, the man behind her in the queue asked how much money she needed to not leave anything behind. It was like 10€ or something and he paid them for her.

Another time a sweet old lady bought a little "care package" full of food for the little family that lived next to her, because they were tight on money that month.

There is a mother that comes in with her son and he is always proud of his painted glitter nails she does for him. She buys him magazines "for girls" or some pink toy, too without batting an eye.

Sometimes some customers buy candy and give me some of it as a gift (especially around Christmas time, because "you must have so much stress").

Thank you. These are all so lovely. I do cashier work too and sometimes it feels like the nice customers get overshadowed by all the rude/difficult ones.

The one about the boy with the painted nails is so nice to hear, I've seen several customers over the summer holidays refuse to buy something for their boy saying "No you can't have that, it's too girly/pink/cutesy." It's such an outdated attitude that needs to die out.

Same anon.

Yes! It was kind of nice to have a reason to remember those really nice moments. I swear I see really nice people every day, but the rude ones really do overshadow them somehow. Even it was only one, they can really ruin your day.

That's why I included the story. It always breaks my heart when there are little boys playing with the fake jewellry or want some pink candy and the (grand)parents are like "No, put that back, that's only for girls." (you know, in that weird '~and girls are inferior to you' tone)
I hate those coded toys so much. :/
So that little boy and his mother really make my day every time I see them.

Just today I had a customer support/defend me when another one was being rude (you know, the usual drill, acting as if I personally make the prices). That was super nice.

I also remember some giving me tissues and everything way back when a customer made me cry (I was a really sensitive plant when I first started out).

So true. I can go into a shift in the best mood ever, then the first customer is one of those "but WHY don't you have this in stock, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF" ones and it just puts a damper on the day. Like, dude, you're severely overestimating the amount of power and influence I have in this place.

My dad and I had a strained conversation with my gran when she came to visit once, because she was "worried" about my little boy cousin liking pink and wanting to try on dresses. I can almost understand it with the elderly because gender roles/attitudes were so strict when they were growing up, but seeing it being enforced by parents in this day and age really gets to me.

Customers who step in and deter the rude ones are the best. Most people will just look awkward and pretend they didn't see/hear anything. I'm sorry that twat made you cry, though. :(

As a grocery store cashier I've had a few great customers. One had two orders. The first was for under $20 and was food. The second was over $100 of travel toiletries. We got to talking and it turns out he buys the toiletries to donate to shelters. Another customer comes in once a month to buy a whole big grocery cart full of breakfast things. Like dozens upon dozens of eggs, gallons upon gallons of orange juice and milk, and so many loaves of bread. This is because once a month they make breakfast for people in need, paying for it themselves. They're not huge things in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me smile.

I'm really sorry your charity box was stolen. I hope something can be done about it.

That is so awesome and put a huge smile on my face. <3 Please give them a big high-five from me next time.

And thank you. I'm going to submit a story to the local paper as another anon suggested, so hopefully it'll get some attention and maybe someone can identify him. I can't believe anyone would stoop so low. I'm still angry. :(

I reblogged one of those "when you're in a fandom of one" posts, mentioning in the tags that I've been waiting nine years for a conversation about my fandom, and someone saw it and messaged me that they bought the book. The conversation never happened, but it still warmed my heart.

That's really sweet of them. It's lonely being in a tiny fandom. Can I ask which one it is?

Beyond the Western Sea by Avi - no point in posting anon. I read it when I was young and didn't realize how cliche the plot the was.

I once accidentally lost an envelope with 1500€ in it and the kids who found it took the time to locate me themselves, even when the only info they had was the logo on the envelope and my nickname and my grandma's name written on a birthday card.
