I feel this way about pokemon. No I don't know which starter I'd pick for such and such a character in a completely unrelated canon. Pokemon was, believe it or not, after my time. I didn't grow up with it in the decades it was/is so pervasive. And its super odd how everyone is assumed to know the difference between Gold and Silver or Red and Blue or whatever. I still don't even know what 'you like mudkip?' really means.

I get that it was pervasive through large amounts of some people's childhoods but so was School House Rock and you don't see me expecting everyone I meet in fandom to be able to sing the 'grammar conjunction junction' song.

The only reason I know anything about Pokemon is because my nephew and I are 12 years apart and it came to the West when he was like 3. I had to read all the text on the cards and games to him.

Personally, the big "Adults enjoy it too!" that was after my time is Harry Potter. I was just over the age range for it, and it was before "Adults love it too!" really kicked in so I just tried the first book, found it too young for my tastes, though the movies were fine, and moved on with my life while sitting back and watching the fandom wank.

fucksake tho

I was 100% the prime pokemon generation and I never got into it

tons of kids who weren't around for the heydey get into the newest iteration all the time

there IS no "it's time" with a megafranchise like that

it's okay to say you're just not into something without making it generational

baby, the first version of it came out when I was already an adult. So yes, it may be multi-generational but its still generational. Just because you weren't into it doesn't mean it didn't hit big and shape the way a great many of that generation still interact in fandom spaces making pokemon comparisons with the expectation that everyone is going to understand what they mean. The same way 'what House do you think this character would be in?' is done by the kids that grew up on Harry Potter do.
