She was a good character, find a new slant

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She could have been if she hadn't been so badly written. Find a better hill to die on.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't be allowed to call things 'badly written' without having a more substantive reason to justify it, at this point. It's such an overused, meaningless phrase.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but... how do we know they don't have a more substantive reason to justify their use of 'badly written' and just didn't feel like writing a 30 page manifesto to comment on a secret?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying they don't have a more substantive point. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to have at least some reference to what it actually is. And it's something that annoys me generally, not just with this anon or thread. Pet peeve.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably that anon who thinks TLJ is the worst thing since Trump election, lol.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess what, there's actually several of us who don't like the movie. But go ahead, try to insult everyone who doesn't share your worship for it.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that some people don't like the movie and that's fine, it's just a movie

But it annoys me when people say something is 'badly written' and leave it at that

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh stop being such a sanctimonious prick by pretending even a huge essay of reasons would in any way change your already formed opinion. Because every time we give you people reasons why we think it's badly written, even when they have nothing to do with the classic dudebro complaints about this movie, all you do is throw a tantrum crying "bwaaahh stoopid dudebro doesn't like my pwecious movie!" and quite honestly, I'm not in the mood for this dumb game anymore. I don't see you giving a huge list of reasons why you think it is well written either btw.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This whole "nobody is allowed to criticize or dislike the things I deem good" argument... how is it working out for you?

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely not what I'm saying here.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
So you're NOT the anon who said "You shouldn't be allowed to call things 'badly written' without having a more substantive reason to justify it"?

Because that very much sounds like you're saying people can't just say they didn't like something. They can't even give a short reason why, they have to "justify it"... and that's kind of douchey.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
DA - "it's badly written" isn't the same thing as "I just didn't like it." One is objective and one is subjective.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Badly written" is not a subjective claim in the way that "I didn't like it" is, that's kind of the whole point

How about both of you recognize that opinion is opinion and agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah because everyone else in the NuWars franchise are great.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Just because some things are even worse doesn't really make a not-great thing better.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No but it's telling people single her out and not characters like Rey or Finn.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO she has potential but it would've been nice to get more screen time and more character stuff. The new SW movies are fun, but they're heavy on the action and light on character development. I find many of the new characters interesting, but don't feel like they're being used that well.

There are legitimate criticisms of the characters, you know. Trying to tell people they can't possibly have any critiques of a character unless they prove it to you with an essay is...yeah,no.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a difficult balance to walk - giving Rose & Finn as much screen time and character development as they did was a major reason for the movie's problems with pace. But it seems to me that they did try to spend a fair amount of time with the character, and that she got a bunch of distinctive character beats, and that those beats were really important to the plot. If you just didn't like the character, fair enough. If those character notes didn't add up to a good character, I think that's interesting. But "badly written" doesn't tell me anything at all. I'm not asking for an essay, just something more than 'badly written'.

Also: posting on my phone is really annoying and I think it makes me come off more bad tempered, because I'm annoyed at dealing with my stupid keyboard and autocorrect and because it makes me not want to type more so my posts get more brusque. So, sorry if I'm coming off harsh.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand wanting more detail, but you're coming off as trying to dismiss and silence people who disagree with you because they haven't provided enough "proof" for why their opinions are as legitimate as yours.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"badly written" would be a meaningless phrase even if I agreed with the opinion

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Even if you gave them a metric fuckton of reasons, they'd say they're not valid and would somehow move the goalpost.
