She was a good character, find a new slant

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She could have been if she hadn't been so badly written. Find a better hill to die on.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't be allowed to call things 'badly written' without having a more substantive reason to justify it, at this point. It's such an overused, meaningless phrase.

How about both of you recognize that opinion is opinion and agree to disagree.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah because everyone else in the NuWars franchise are great.

IMO she has potential but it would've been nice to get more screen time and more character stuff. The new SW movies are fun, but they're heavy on the action and light on character development. I find many of the new characters interesting, but don't feel like they're being used that well.

There are legitimate criticisms of the characters, you know. Trying to tell people they can't possibly have any critiques of a character unless they prove it to you with an essay is...yeah,no.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-14 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a difficult balance to walk - giving Rose & Finn as much screen time and character development as they did was a major reason for the movie's problems with pace. But it seems to me that they did try to spend a fair amount of time with the character, and that she got a bunch of distinctive character beats, and that those beats were really important to the plot. If you just didn't like the character, fair enough. If those character notes didn't add up to a good character, I think that's interesting. But "badly written" doesn't tell me anything at all. I'm not asking for an essay, just something more than 'badly written'.

Also: posting on my phone is really annoying and I think it makes me come off more bad tempered, because I'm annoyed at dealing with my stupid keyboard and autocorrect and because it makes me not want to type more so my posts get more brusque. So, sorry if I'm coming off harsh.

I liked her, but I can understand your frustration.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I want a Rose novel, too. I'm sure it won't happen, but I still want one (Paige too).

There is a book featuring them. It's called Cobalt Squadron.

I kind of feel this on a macro level with the whole sequel trilogy. I want to like it. I don't exactly hate it (there are some choices that I'm not thrilled about but I'm waiting to see 9 to see where they're going), but nothing really inspires me about any of the new characters.

The new SW comics, though, are awesome. Rose and Paige had a cute comic in ST Adventures that you might want to check out. I'm hoping there will be more of that.

And, she has a good solid base for a character that could be expanded in 9. But I said that about Finn and they really didn't do anything with the interesting character base for him in 8 so I'm not hopeful any more.

I feel like she's developed as much as any Star Wars character in their first movie appearance. I could describe most of them in a sentence. She's not the main character but we see enough of her to be interesting.

Personally, I love her to bits; she gets some cool lines and the actress is adorable.

"I feel like she's developed as much as any Star Wars character in their first movie appearance."

That's part of OP's issue with the character(s), though. A lot of them are suffering from a slight underdevelopment problems.

Yeah, I just don't think it's a problem. It's not as though we got much characterization of say, Obi Wan, in A New Hope.

I thought she was cute and fun-enough. But I'm also not interested in fic for any of the characters in SW movies so I don't delve any deeper with any of them tbh.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Rose which makes me sad because I've never hated a SW character before. I can even tolerate Jar-Jar and Padme. I suppose it doesn't help that she's a clumsily written character trapped in a pointless subplot written with all the subtlety of a pro wrestling vignette, but I despised the way they dumbed Finn down so she'd have someone to lecture.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't Finn, like, a formerly brainwashed stormtrooper with no experience or knowledge of the universe outside of that

Did I forget something

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
1) people who hate Rose for being at worst mediocre more than Jar Jar for being at worst yet another racist caricature in Star Wars confuse the hell out of me

And 2) wait, is Padme a hated character??

I liked her character a lot but I do agree that she could have been better written. But I think that happens with many female characters - fans just seem much more willing to "flesh out" male characters than female ones. (I'm not telling people what to do or who to like - I'm just saying it's a thing.)

(I found Hux totally forgettable, myself, but that's me.)

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hux is totally forgettable. It's just that some fans also find him pretty next to Kylo so they're willing to ignore that to make their pretty boys fuck.

The issue with TLJ in general is that they tried to cram too many storylines into it, so the characterization suffered. A lot.

If, instead of separating Finn and Rose from the rest of the group for their pointless escapades on Casino Planet, they'd kept them with Poe and worked on that angle of things, I think they could have made the relationship more believable and made all of the character development more organic.

Like, one of the things that I always found super-annoying is that Finn basically defected because he was sick of watching his friends die for a cause that he didn't believe in. Then, one of the first things that Rose does is punishes him for trying to save one of his friends from dying for a cause that he has just joined and has little reason to actually believe in. And this could have been a very interesting exploration of both of their characters, but it's completely ignored so they can go on their stupid mission, free a bunch of creepy space horses and get a bunch of slave children punished for not adequately guarding the stables.

It's definitely not the actors' fault, and I still like the character. But I like her more for the actor and the potential than for what we actually got on screen.

I liked her okay, I just didn't like the Finn/Rose romance because it felt very forced, like something generic you would see in any other standard action movie. Why couldn't they have just left them as friends? (granted, Finn didn't exactly kiss her back, so maybe that's all they'll be)

(Anonymous) 2018-09-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Rose in TLJ and I thought the audience learned a lot about her in the movie. For Jyn, I was more receptive to her after reading several supplementary books. With Rose, I connected to her right away.

I don't think anyone really got much character development in TLJ besides Luke and Kylo; Finn in particular is totally wasted, but Rey and Poe don't get much to establish their personalities either. Without scenes in TFA to set her up, it's not surprising Rose comes across as incredibly flat.

Maybe try reading Cobalt Squadron by Elizabeth Wein? It's a pre-movie novel tie in that does a lot to flesh out Rose and Rose's relationship with her sister.
