She didn't hate him. Actually in the book she goes on at length about the complexity of her feelings for him, says very specifically that she does not hate him, and talks about how her feelings for him confuse and scare her because she dare not admit them even to herself.

Unless you only read some version that was abridged for kids, or something.

If I read an abridged version then the abridgers failed pretty hard.

Admittedly it's been a few years since I read it (it was a horrible, horrible book, I will never pick it up again as long as I ever live) but from what I recall there was a page and a half about how horrifyingly creepy he was followed by a few sentences tagged on about how he was at the same time so pathetic that she felt sorry for him.

Well, there are a few very abridged versions which definitely fail very hard, and the version most commonly in print (because the translation is out of copyright) misses out a few chunks but doesn't even admit it's abridged - but even in that version she very specifically says she doesn't hate him.

Ahh, found the line I was looking for.

(When Raoul asks her who she loves. Would she love Erik if he did not fill her with horror? If he were not hideous?)

"Unhappy, man! Why do you tempt destiny Why do you ask me about things I hide deep in my conscience the way I would hide a sin?"

As the OP says below, Christine's feelings are far more complex than just "I feel sorry for him and I'm scared of him".

I seem to recall context giving that the opposite meaning of what you're suggesting, a few paragraphs later, but whatever. It was a horrible book and I'm not digging through it again to argue over a moot point with you. No matter how you slice it, even if she thought he was the greatest thing since ghost blowjobs, he'd still be a horrifyingly creepy, controlling stalker and staying with him would still not be an intelligent decision on her part in any way shape or form.

"I seem to recall context giving that the opposite meaning of what you're suggesting"

LMFAO at someone who read the book once and probably not even a complete translation saying this to [livejournal.com profile] realcdaae of all people.

I'm just observing that while your opinion of the Phantom's character entirely valid, when it comes to interpreting the text itself you are backing a losing horse.

Yes, well, slight exaggeration there, but thanks for the giggle.

Christine, Christine...

I miss the days when you would have given this bot a light flambee, then inserted a skewer into her and flamed her until her outsides were blackened and only her very center still rare, then chomped down and let a few delicious drops of blood seep from your cherry lips to run down your porcelain chin.

YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!

Re: Christine, Christine...

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not really. Plenty of Phantom fans think Christine would have been insane to have returned to the Phantom. Plenty of those of us who watch the show wishing she'd stay with him know perfectly well that it would be an unwise decision in reality, but of course the great thing about fiction is that it's stories.

I think [livejournal.com profile] pikabot is missing the subtleties of Leroux's novel, and complexities of Christine's feelings towards the Phantom (and that's not helped by the most common translation being really pretty shit, and leaving chunks out), but that isn't exactly flameworthy. If she was claiming to be a massive Phantom fan then yeah, I'd be telling her to go read a decent translation and try thinking with a little more depth, but I don't see her expressing that kind of interest in it.

"(it was a horrible, horrible book, I will never pick it up again as long as I ever live)"

That would be why it's widely regarded a classic, right?

D00d, you might dislike it, but it is actually an extremely interesting book, using a journalistic style to rework a gothic novel theme. Though I can see how you would have problems with a lot of literature if you really can't cope with complex emotional reactions that involve both fear and admiration.

Re: 157

[personal profile] pikabot 2008-08-16 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because something's considered a classic doesn't mean it's good. Much like how the fact that the National Art Gallery dropped 1.8 million dollars on the Voice of Fire doesn't make it a good painting.

I will admit that the journalism angle was interesting, except that half the time the writer plain forgot about it and wrote the book as normal.

Again, not actually what she says in the book. :)
