Am I the only person who feel like it's some kind of betrayal when people write novels about fandom?

I don't feel it's a betrayal, but I would like to see one that gets all the fandom aspects right and doesn't paint all fans as delusional wackos who think it's appropriate to submit their fic for a college level creative writing class that asked for original work (looking at you, Fangirl!). I read Ship It and thought it did an excellent job at capturing the spirit of fandom and I initially liked the MC, but I kept hoping she would mature a little and she never did, just turned into the worst kind of fan.

I think I'm so far in that I can't really imagine how fandom looks like to outsiders. I just know that I cringed hard when "Simon and the Homo Sapiens Agenda" got into Drarry fic, but I guess any person who has stumbled across tumblr these days knows what fandom exists.

I think I'm just old.

"delusional whacko"

For what? not completely abiding by the exact rules of the assignment. I mean if they ignored important rules they should get a shitty grade but that doesn't make them delusional or anything. Hell it doesn't even effect anyone but the person getting the grade and the person paying for school. compared to the main character here who is being judged for hurting multiple people to get her way.

Honestly you sound like a judgemental dickwad.

Not for nothing here, but people writing novels about how crazy fandom can be is really nothing new.

Jane Austen was one of the first (if not THE first) with "Nothanger Abbey." It is 100% about gothic novel fandom, to the point that she actually name-checks the Big Name Authors and Popular Novels of her day.

It's hilarious.

It's spot on.

It made me squirm.

Because, as it turns out, 18th century fandom is EXACTLY like 21st century fandom. Thanks to Jane, we've got proof.

On the one hand, it feels a bit like "Nooo! You are telling everyone our secrets!" but on the other hand, fandom is way more mainstream than it used to be, so there's no hard line between fandom and "normal" anymore.
