I just hate that in general, spoiling doesn't seem to be as taboo as it once was. If you don't watch something RIGHT AWAY -- as in, the night it airs -- you're fair game to get spoiled. It sucks, but that seems to be the way it is now.

So I would say that yeah, if you truly want to avoid being spoiled and enjoy the show you're watching, don't engage in any fandom stuff until you're done with the whole thing. That's how I do it and it works for me. Maybe you can use the time you would've spent reading fic to finish watching all the episodes :)
