I don't understand the connection between the first part of the secret and the second.

I don't think that's a reasonable burden to put on people

(Anonymous) 2018-09-16 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Same with films for me. If I'm reading correctly, this is about spoiling things that are old, right? If that's the case, yeah.

I want to watch Liz Taylor's "Cleopatra" or other oldies like "Ben-Hur", "Citizen Kane", "Spartacus", "Gone with the Wind", "The Robe", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Rebecca", or films like "The Hunt for Red October", "Batman", "The Addams Family", "Superman", "Star Wars", "Carrie", "Jaws", "Close Encounters", "Inception and any of the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Marvel Cinematic Universe or James Bond films without being spoiled by those who've seen it and holds a snobbish value by saying "but they're old!". It doesn't matter because not many people have the luxury of sitting down to watch these movies and enjoy the wonder of cinema.

Nah, if you don't want to be spoiled don't go into those fandom spaces until you are done. It sucks but a group of fans should not have to avoid talking about their fandom because someone, somewhere might have not watched it.

No reason you can't join the fandom. But people will be talking about things. People shouldn't have to restrict conversations just because someone, somewhere might not have seen it.

Then again, I don't think spoiler marking in general is necessary. Just make clear what media you are talking about, and people should assume that people are going to talk about all parts of that media.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-16 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't do spoiler warnings for anything, and I don't expect others to. People can block me if it's such a big deal to them.

I agree, anon. It baffles me why it's so difficult for people to just pop a quick spoiler tag on stuff. I would never not do that, no matter how old the series

like, I get you with things like character deaths and major plot twists, but at the same time, do realize that yeah, in a lot of the fandom spaces, people don't assume that newbies ever show up anymore. some of the fandoms are so old and dead they probably don't think newbies will ever come. never mind that in some spaces "tag your spoilers" isn't as easy as it is on tumblr. even here on F!S we're good about waiting until comments collapse and using subject lines so people don't stumble on spoilers unless they expand the thread, but not every site, forum, or platform is as easy-breezy.

I'm in a 20 year old fandom for an ongoing show and generally, people are good about not discussing spoiler events openly in front of newbs since yeah, we do still get people coming into the fandom fresh. I've enabled two in the past six months and am currently watching two more stumble on huge events that are already three years old. but if they go to pixiv and start browsing fanart, they're going to get spoiled hardcore because there's just no means of filtering out or even tagging art of characters who died 10 years ago. at some point you just have to accept where is safe, where is not, and what to look at or avoid based on experience.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always just assumed that I'd have to deal with spoilers if I started watching something old and wanted to interact with the fandom.

I just hate that in general, spoiling doesn't seem to be as taboo as it once was. If you don't watch something RIGHT AWAY -- as in, the night it airs -- you're fair game to get spoiled. It sucks, but that seems to be the way it is now.

So I would say that yeah, if you truly want to avoid being spoiled and enjoy the show you're watching, don't engage in any fandom stuff until you're done with the whole thing. That's how I do it and it works for me. Maybe you can use the time you would've spent reading fic to finish watching all the episodes :)

(Anonymous) 2018-09-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry but the world or fandom doesn't revolve around you. It's one thing if it's a new episode or movie that came out this year but expecting spoilers for TV shows that started over 30 years ago is asking too much.

i really think a lot of people would live happier fandom lives if they would stop making such a big deal out of spoilers.

i'm not saying that it's not usually more fun to go in blind, but i believe that being super concerned about spoilers all the time will dampen your enjoyment of fandom much more than knowing something in advance will. try to chill.

I will never understand two things:

1) why people insist it's such an inconvenience and so difficult to put a friendly spoiler tag ahead of spoilers

2) why people interpret it as a personal inconvenience rather than a friendly courtesy to other fans. Like, so resistant to being considerate to others by doing something that's so minimal effort.

Hi OP, if you're looking for fic from earlier seasons, try searching by the season or episode tags.

Sorry, am I misunderstanding the purpose of this community? I made a secret based on how I feel. I don't expect anything from having it be posted. Yeesh, this really wasn't that serious.

I'm fairly new to fandomsecrets and this was my first secret posted. I guess I don't get this community still :/

It's your own duty to avoid spoilers. Nobody else is gonna feel the need to monitor themselves... especially if it's old news for them.

[insert obligatory joke spoilers about Shakespeare here]

(Anonymous) 2018-09-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, though, I kind of agree with you. I do like being surprised by media, old or new.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's a "statute of limitations" on spoilers, as far as I'm concerned. And I prefer to be spoiler-free myself, so I know how annoying it is when someone spoils something - and I also know I take that risk by engaging in a fandom.

Something that's in theaters - spoiler cut. A TV episode that aired less than a week ago - spoiler cut. But expecting fans of a show that ended, say, a decade ago to be cautious when talking within a fandom? That is a ridiculous and selfish attitude, IMO. You need to take some personal responsibility (and look at the issue reasonably) rather than trying to police other people in those cases.

This ties in to that other secret about "after my time" quite nicely.

There is a certain magic to not knowing something's coming. Like kids finding out Darth Vader is Luke's father. I once watched my room mate watch Psycho for the first time and she didn't know any of the twists. It was amazing. She was genuinely shocked and I think that's a rather special thing. Sometimes I It shows that media can still have an impact.

I think it's common courtesy to put spoiler tags when you're online. However, if you're out in the world, you can't expect everyone at work not to talk about Star Trek or Buffy. Especially with reboots and parody shows happening.

Speaking as someone who's currently watching a show that's older than any of the shows in the secret, and that aired before I was born, I can say it's tough to avoid spoilers. It's a show that's such a cultural touchstone that it appears in other shows and things. I had to avoid an entire episode of another show because it referenced my show.

And I have no one to blame but myself. I don't expect people to not talk about the show in casual conversation or homage or anything.

But if you've guessed the show, please no spoilers. I'm only on Season 2.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-17 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've never really been bothered by spoilers. As a matter of fact, I've been pretty grateful for them for a couple of things - letting me know about something I didn't actually want to see, letting me anticipate something I did, or letting me know about something I didn't know I wanted to watch until I knew it had the spoiler in it. There are maybe a couple of times that I would have benefited more from being spoiler-free. And sometimes I forget I knew about the spoiler until it's happening, which is actually quite interesting.

I'm going to use the analogy of holding the door from upthread for spoilers for older media. I think somebody holding the door (putting a spoiler tag/cut) is nice, but not expected. I would try to do it if I thought of it, but I wouldn't get on anyone's case if they didn't, nor would I expect anyone to get on my case if I didn't. A lot of people just don't really think to hold the door, and that just means you have to get the door yourself (avoid discussions and fandom activities where spoilers could be until you finish watching/reading). If someone slams the door in your face (spoils you when you ask not to be spoiled), that should not be expected, that is uncalled for and rude and I would understand being upset about that (and I know there are some people that do that).

All I could think about when reading this secret was that Anne Hathaway interview where someone tried to chastise her for "spoiling" something in the Les Mis movie, and she yelled "OH READ A BOOK" at them in exasperation. Or that interview with Martin Freeman about the Hobbit, same thing happened, and he was all "oh sorry but uhm well the book was published in 1936 so...*helpless shrug*" lol

(Anonymous) 2018-09-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
When people start discussing something you haven't finished watching or reading yet, that constitutes your spoiler warning. They start talking about TNG? Assume spoilers for TNG. They start talking about Buffy? Assume spoilers for Buffy.

Especially for long-running shows, the older it is, the harder it is to remember when certain things happened, so announcing spoilers for specific episodes, or even specific seasons, may require research before posting just to be able to provide that precise a warning. "Just tag for spoilers" is not actually a minimal effort of you are trying to accommodate people who want to join the fandom and discuss everything up to Season 4 episode 12 exactly, but not be spoiled for anything beyond that.

Also, if you don't want to be spoiled for Firefly, just watch it already. It's not like there's a lot of episodes.
