i really think a lot of people would live happier fandom lives if they would stop making such a big deal out of spoilers.

i'm not saying that it's not usually more fun to go in blind, but i believe that being super concerned about spoilers all the time will dampen your enjoyment of fandom much more than knowing something in advance will. try to chill.

Boy, do I agree with this. People are so uptight about spoilers and IDGI. I'm gonna watch regardless of whether or not I've been 'spoiled'.

I tend to agree with this. If I happen to be in a discussion where people are putting up spoiler tags/warnings, I'll do so, and if I'm talking to somebody who's just getting into something I like and specifically tells me they don't want to be spoiled, I'll absolutely respect that wish.

But yeah, speaking for myself, I really don't care whether I get spoiled about stuff. I've never felt that spoilers have ruined my enjoyment of whatever I watched-if anything, it's made me more curious to find out how it all plays out. It's one thing to hear/read about what happens in a show/book/movie, but it's another entirely to actually see or read the thing in question for yourself.

And on the very rare occasion that I do want to avoid spoilers for something, because yeah, I do get the element of surprise, I just try and be very careful about avoiding places online where I might run across that kind of information.

Plus, I also figure that if you go anywhere on the internet nowadays, you're going to run the risk of coming across spoilers about any and everything. That's just how the internet goes in general, unfortunately, no matter how hard you try to avoid spoilers or how hard other people try to use spoiler warnings.

Exactly. I knew the Big Character Death for my fandom going in but that didn't stop me from crying so hard I got the hiccups when it actually happened.

And it's not that hard to avoid spoilers for things, it really isn't. I just watched Coco for the first time the other day and I'd managed to avoid all of the spoilers for that up until now.

I think there are things that if you hear about them ahead of time can minimize the impact you get out of something and that's when it's unfortunate to be spoiled even for things that have been out a while.

Like, for instance, what happens to Wash in Serenity. If I'd been spoiled for that, some of the impact of the moment would've been gone because I would've known what was going to happen.

Or if you've played Zelda's Breath of the Wild the whole game is about discovery and I know there are several points in time where I've come upon something in the game that if I'd been following a guide (don't follow a guide) and it had told me in advance what I was about to encounter, it would've totally ruined the moment. I will never forget approaching a shrine and coming face to face with something that truly surprised me and felt like a moment you'd see in a movie. If I'd known about it before that happened, I wouldn't have had the same feeling and I wouldn't have even known what I was missing!

Uh, anyway...despite all that, you're not necessarily wrong about over-focusing on not being spoiled is also a way to lessen one's enjoyment. Getting angry at people for not spoiler tagging All The Things is just not good for one's blood pressure and sometimes the things I've seen people get upset about not being tagged just feels like going a little over the top.
