i legit can't understand people who ship something but hate one, or both halves, of the ship, or hate the ship in the canon.

and i don't mean they hated what it turned into over seasons, they hated it from day 1 but still ship it for some reason?

genuinely the most confusing kind of behavior i come across in fandoms sometimes.

[but then i have to actually like the canon relationship/all parties involved or i won't ship a couple]

I don't get that, either, yeah. I'm with you, I have to like both the characters I'm shipping, too. I want to be able to get what they each see in the other.

I can see the hating the ship in canon thing, depending on the show and how the couple gets together. Sometimes you can see the train wreck coming and you want no part of it. Sometimes the canon ship is framed as a mistake before the endgame ship can happen. Sometimes they get together because of a lie or under horrible, character-destroying reasons. All of it can make you hate how that ship is portrayed while not erasing your desire to see it done better.

I’m right with you on the “why ship characters you don’t like” thing though.

I don't get this either. Especially when people actively write for the pairing.
