There's a common argument made that copyright terms have gotten too long (especially in the United States) due to corporate interests (especially Disney) supporting extensions to maintain control over their intellectual property. The argument is that allowing companies to maintain copyrights effectively indefinitely impoverishes the public domain and the creative process.
